Loss of power and white smoke

Hi I have a Kia Rio 2007 1.6 diesel and i have lost power and there is white smoke coming out of exhaust. The engine still sounds fine and is not over-heating despite this. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks

It could be the turbo or the inlet valves

The Turbo is an expensive unit Lizzy, as said, it should be covered under the warrante, has anyone put water in the derv? Stupid Answer? I think not, its been known.

hi as it is a 2007 it only has a 3 year warranty so not covered for issue like this.

Check the Flexible pipes to the turbo, look at the very very closely for hairline splits. is this smoke constant or does it evaporate after about 10 / 20 mins?

Are you sure that it isn't a head gasket failure, white smoke is the clue, water is leaking in the head

hi the white smoke is faint when just standing still but it bellows out when the foot is on the accelerator.

For your piece of mind Lizzy, can you go into your local VAT REG Garage, not the dealer or K.F?? ask them to pressure test the cooling system for leaks, this will tell them & you if the head Gasket has gone as said, have you run the car without water? should it be the head Gasket you are talking about a lot of money, but find out first, if it's the worst check around for prices and make sure you get this in writing before the job starts.

Is the engine consuming oil or water? This might give you a clue as to whether it's a head gasket or turbo failure. Likewise, is the white smoke coming out more like steam [not particularly smelly] or does it smell smokey and oily when you have the engine running. I'm not suggesting you stick your nose up the exhaust pipe to check it, just an overall impression is all you need. If the coolant level never moves [other than the difference between hot and cold during warm up] then Albags is probably right "it's yer turbo ma'am". Whatever, take it to your nearest Kia dealer for their opinion. Frachised dealers are usually the most knowledgeable when it comes to issues with particular vehicles, and they will know if there are any quirky things that happen which may mislead other people.

I had a similar prob with my Hyundai diesel. Turned out that some small varmit(mouse or pine martin) had chewed through a rubber pipe to the turbo. Cost me 20euro at the garage. Hope your problem is fixed as easily
