I've just come across this article on the DM site which shows pictures of where the apparent slaves were living.

Aside from the duvets needing a good wash and the kitchen could do with a wipe down, am I the only one that can't really see the squalor?

I've lived in worse, ok only for a while but I was happy and clean. And £30 a day is not bad if you have no mortgage or rent ! I'm only on a bit more than that myself !
It looks pretty squalid to me, but that doesn't mean they're slaves. I've seen far worse on 'how clean is your house?'.
The prosecution seem to have unco-operative 'victims'. They might have been exploited, but they themselves do not see themselves as slaves. It might be difficult to get a conviction if they do not have any more evidence.

Exactly. I've seen council houses in a far worse condition. Granted it wouldn't be my preferred choice of accommodation but it could be worse.
I think we don't know all the facts yet.

Yes Gromit, I believe at least one person has already returned to the camp by choice and refused to co-operate.

Perhaps thats because he's fearful. Or perhaps it's because he wasn't unhappy there.

If they came from soupl kitchens etc then it has to be far better than a bench or a cardboard box.

No doubt quite a few do not want Plod to know who they are so would be naturally unwilling to co operate?

From the Cambridge dictionary, a slave is defined as:
"a person who is legally owned by someone else and has to work for them". I doubt very much they were legally owned, so why are they called slaves? More like underpaid servants I would have thought.
Maybe the reason a lot of them are co-operating with the police is that they can see some compensation on the horizon.
