We could best honour the memory of those who died by giving what we can to help their relatives.
Will you help?

This may sound hard hearted but no. Surely this is the time for the Unions to step in, or am i mistaken in that ?

I don't know what the unions will do for the families. I do know that this fund is a way to turn sympathy into real help.
The NUM is still a viable union, can they not contribute to the fund in any way. I had a look at their website, and can only see messages of condolence, that is all.
Yes, I will. Thanks for posting that Sandy.

There are a number of people in this local area who have died recently but weren't in the news. I'm sure their families will be grateful if you were to give what you can to them too.
RH, no one said anything about damned if they do, but suggest that if they are contributing then there was nothing about it on their website.
Thanks sandy!
actually i found it really sad - on the news last night they said " the fund for families has reached 10 000 pound now, and it made me think that that won't even pay for a posh funeral for one of them!
wont even pay for a posh funeral? bloody hell how posh would 10 grand cover
there was a thread on here the other day how the average funeral was about 7-8 grand. i presuming average is not posh. I also expect it will be telvised (at least a clip on the news) so i guess they wont go for a basic funeral.
won't be that expensive here.

but, no i won't be contributing. they would have life insurance and other cover from the mine owners PLUS these things end up causing rifts and being misspent etc!
Maybe they won't want a 'posh' funeral. I'd say 7-8 grand is way above average
Surely the families will receive a huge amount of compensation?

Whilst I'm deeply sorry for the families, I wont be contributing
As much as this has saddened me, I too, won't be contributing, there will be or should be , in place, insurances and such like, there should not be hardships for the bereaved families, this should be taken care of by either the Mine owners or the Union representing the Miners, very sad indeed for all concerned
The truth of the matter is that, even if they would like to, most people cannot afford to contribute to all the well meant, worthy causes. My heart goes out to the families, as I know how hard a time they must be going through. However, we can't be there for every situation like this and there are just so many.
I agree with Carakeel,

The UK citizens can only give so much to people in distress as every day in the media and TV we are asked to donate money to so many causes here and abroad for donkeys, cats, dogs, tigers etc, there has to be a point where we cant keep giving, as we all have our own money problems.

Maybe the government should step in, they seem to be generous giving money abroad!
poor people die in tragic circumstances every day.

sometimes you have to draw the line.
