Dale Farm residents who 'have nowhere to go' if evicted.......
.......many actually own property in Ireland

Why are we pussyfooting around these scrounging, tax avoiding law breakers?
Send in the heavy mob, clear the horde of great unwashed (aka socialists/tree huggers/do gooders) massed at the camp entrance, then round up the gypsies and put them on the first ferry back to Ireland

The land that the council says is only worth £120,000 could have been bought off the travellers for maybe £300,000 or more and the immediate problem would have been solved. How can the council now justify these hugely increased costs???
Hi Carakeel- According to Dispatches it seems the travellers tried to negotiate around £6 million for the land which is far higher than the £300000 figure you have suggested.
Anyway, the issue is primarily one of principle relating to whether people should be able to get aay with building without permission on greenbelt land.

Ah, I hadn't heard about the 6m! Thanks for telling me, I had missed that!Yikes, that was rather over the top, especially as the part of land they had bought only cost £100,000 at the time!! Why oh why do these people think they can make such outrageous demands?? I agree that it is also a matter of principle. Perhaps they should have to carry the costs of putting things right again? I know they wouldn't really be able to, but the thought does come to mind.
OK Carakeel. Good idea. So they move to the field next door, repeat the process and trouser another few hundred grand of taxpayers’ dosh. Then some of their mates realise it’s not a bad little earner and do the same. I think you get my drift.
Sometimes justice has to be paid for. These people have been found after many court hearings to have flagrantly broken the law and apart from being evicted they should also be prosecuted. If convicted the court should order they pay the Council’s costs of evicting them.
Meantime, in the same county a couple of weeks ago it was reported that another resident had bought some land, obtained planning permission to build a house and began building. Unfortunately he built his house a couple of metres adrift from the plans. He was ordered to tear the building down and start again.
Where was Vanessa Redgrave to lobby on his behalf? Where was the UN’s Prof Yves Cabannes suggesting that the council was operating double standards? The law must be applied equally, and in the case of the Dale Farm residents it will not be so until they are evicted.

I don't know why the people at Dale Farm are referred to as 'travellers'. They've not moved for 10 years!
I recently spent some time helping to clear up after travellers were moved from land near my home - and, overlooking the damage they did to property there, for which no one was held accountable, it was far from pleasant. Apart from the mounds of rubbish they left, in an effort to encourage them to keep the place clean until an eviction order could be served, our Parish Council provided them with portaloos - but the bushes seem to have been their preferred option. Nice!

It was upsetting for our little village, B00. With their dogs running loose, and their aggressive attitude, the place, which is a recreational field with children's swings etc, became a no-go area for the residents here. I don't think people would mind so much if they respected the property they invade - but they don't! And now it's costing us a substantial sum to repair the damage they did.
Too late naomi, jake-the-peg has left the building. Well, until he decides to come back (again!).
Anyway, there's a perfectly legal site where the travellers can move to literally just down the road from the illegal one. It's because they expanded out from the legal site which caused the problem. Many of the travellers have already moved there, leaving mostly professional activists to stay on at the illegal site. It's just another bandwagon for these people to jump on. Saves them going to work I suppose.

Before anyone says its because of the cost they need to think again Outside of the school holiday periods they are extremely cheap sometimes negotiable about £50 per week. How do I know? Because in between changing houses I stayed at a caravan site for about 4 months leading up to the 6 week school holiday period.
Naomi, i did watch the dispatches programme, and the people concerned did themselves no favours whatsoever. Whining about being moved on and on, when all the time that's the lifestyle, to travel, sorry but i lost the plot and my rag after the the first half hour. As to Dale Farm, what's the betting they get their way and stay put.
