As a Muslim that is exactly what I expect from USA president. However he is right when he said that this would not be settled in UN. Because I have never seen UN doing anything against the will of the big countries. Sometimes it does make me think about what someone once said. "UN is only here to give big countries control over small countries, so that they could steal their resources and use them for their own benefits".
I have some sympathy with Obama's reservations, but I have never agreed with the ability of members of the Security Council to have a veto. So I regret that the US is taking this course of action.
For now, the compromise that Palestine should be elected as an associate member by the entire congress of nations seems sensible.
But the veto does send out a bad message to the Palestinians.
Russia, meanwhile, continues to veto Kosova's accession to the UN.

Its been obvious for some years now that Israel is the 52nd state of the US. For all their talk of peace talks which have come to nothing the Palestinian Arabs are a downtrodden race with the Israelis gaining more and more ground in which to build houses. Its a bold and clever move by the Palestinians and forces the Israelis to do something concrete. The only real solution is for Israel to retreat to the former borders of the 7-day war instead of land grabbing.
Israel is a client state of the USA but acts as though it was the master. The relationship between them is the classic case of the tail wagging the dog.
The Nazis used an excuse of needing lebensraum, living space, to launch their attacks. The Israelis do much the same.
They have as much respect for the Palestinians as the Nazis had for the European Jews.
If there is one single thing which motivated 9-11 and the attacks on the London Tube this was western support for the Israeli aggressors.

Those that attacked us did not need any other excuse other than the fact that the US is 'The West'. If the Israel/Palestine conflict did not exist it would still have occurred. The perpetrators were narrow minded fanatics - with the tacit support of millions of others. I see no one condemning what is happening in Syria; no 'aid conveys' to assist real oppressed people. A tad too dangerous for the bleeding hearts liberals there. No, keep on ranting at the only democratic country in the area.
I agree with Sandy Roe. Israel is guilty of extreme land grabbing & terrorism they have stolen large quantities of Palestinian land & should be forced by the U.N to give it all back. Palestine should be declared a state as important as the yanks seem to think that Israel is ( vote worrying in the US ?). I would have thought that the way the Jews were treated by the Nazis they would have more compassion for their neighbours, it seems to me that they are no better than their former oppressors.

I largely agree with Raleigh, who makes some very good points.
I also think that we need to be careful in going too overboard in our condemnation of Israel, not because everything Israel does is justified, not by a long way, indeed they are to be condemned for many of the things they have done, but this ignores the blind fanaticism on the other side also. The Palestinian people have, like so many people the world over, been very badly led by their own leaders.

Thank you ichkeria. I do pretend that Israel is the most perfect state in the world --perhaps someone would like to suggest which is - but it is the most democratic in the middle east. There are Arab members of parliament, and Jews and Arabs work side-by-side in the hospitals and at other high levels. Unfortunately, there are many - incited by their elected thuggish leaders - who do not want to work with or in Israel. They do not want Israel to exist.
Whiskey . You are right has got bigger over the past 70 years but they did not steal it . They were attacked by all the surrounding Arab countries who wanted to " Wipe Israel off the map of the world ". They still do !
The Arabs lost and Israel has held on to the land which they need for their security. Since then the fanatics on both sides have prevented all attempts to find a solution. Yassar Arafat could have got 90% of what he wanted in the 90s the UN, US and most of the Arab states agreed to the agreement . There were only two outstanding disputes. The status of Jerusalem and the return of the Palestinian refugees. Both of these could have been tackled later but Arafat, under pressure from the likes of Hamas , rejected the whole package .
Since then attitudes have hardened on both sides and I believe Abbas and the Palestinians are right to take it to the UN . Talking is getting nowhere . Hamas are still firing rockets and Israel is building settlements on what use to be Arab land . I shoud point out much of the land and houses are being sold by the Arab owners to the Israelis . There may be a reason for this but it is not being stolen. Other land had been taken by the Israelis when the won the wars.
Going to the UN may knock some heads together.

rov // The only real solution is for Israel to retreat to the former borders of the 7-day war instead of land grabbing. //
So you think giving back the the Golan Heights to Syria would promote peace do you . They used it to bombard Israel and to to launch an invasion.
Did it do any good when Israel pulled out of Gaza ? Almost immediately they started to rocket Israel and when Hamas took over there were nightly raids against Israel. That's why Israel built the wall.
keyplus // UN is only here to give big countries control over small countries, so that they could steal their resources and use them for their own benefits". // Silly remark as usual. Why don't you widen your view and see both sides.
