does a carpenter need a specially shaped pencil, why can't he use the same one the rest of us use?

Because it is a special hard pencil for drawing on wood etc, the shape has nothing to do with it.

I was told that the shape lessened the chance of the pencil from rolling away and that the shape of the lead allows the user to draw thick and thin lines as required.

Where can I get one of those non-rolling pencils? I want one for hubby! Diy would be done much quicker and with less swearing!

The trouble is that they don't sit so well behind the ear as round pencils!

Yes ... I use them. They are better than a normal pencil for various joinery tasks.

There are 3 hardness ratings, soft, medium and hard. They are colour coded, as I recall red is the soft one. Very useful for lots of drawing tasks.
