"We mustn't use the terms BC and AD it may offend or alienate non-Christians", says the BBC.

/// 'As the BBC is committed to impartiality it is appropriate that we use terms that do not offend or alienate non-Christians.///

/// In line with modern practice, BCE/CE (Before Common Era/Common Era) are used as a religiously neutral alternative to BC/AD.' ///

This has become an increasingly common practice among academics who deal with the relevant periods - it's quite commonplace. A non-story if ever I saw one.
i'm an atheist and couldn't care less.
Is using AD and BC not PC for Xtians ?
Stories like this are increasingly convincing me that 'political correctness' is a myth, personally.
The most irritating one I'm coming across in research at the moment is eg 2ka for 2000 years.
So, 2ka bp = the start of the common era or CE

I expect soon it will all be accounted in AH.....which means what, you clever ABers?
I'm an atheist and couldn't care less either. It had actually never really occurred to me to be honest lol.
I agree with Krom. It's been happening for years. The Mail does like to stir the pot!
As Kromo says, this is nothing new, CE has been in use for quite some time - it's doesn't bother me at all, I've used it myself in recent writing.

I reckon many people have no idea what AD stands for anyway and just think of it as a date indicator - BC = prehistoric.
Sorry, Krom's last post wasn't there when I posted. I don't think political correctness is a myth - I think it's very real - so I don't agree with him on that bit. I do, however, think that articles such as the one in your link, AOG, are intended specifically to create conflict and disharmony.
LOL.... the last two paragraphs of the mail article are....

"The BBC said last night: 'The BBC has not issued editorial guidance on the date systems.

'Both AD and BC, and CE and BCE are widely accepted date systems and the decision on which term to use lies with individual production and editorial teams.'"

So this really is a non story, not only is it about something that has been going on for years but the entire story is made up and the "BBC" has not turned it's back on anything.
I agree with your last sentence, naomi - the article no doubt intended to arouse further shock and horror amongst readers about yet another "erosion to our society".
LOL chuck, thank you - nothing like having the full facts on a story!
My wife works for a charity and often has to take down the name of the person phoning for help.

They have all be told not to ask for a persons "Christian" name but their "given" name.

I wonder if they will be re-naming Corpus Christi College, in case it offends all those non Christian students?

Some notable dates for us to remember.

First Roman Invasion of England, 55 BCE

Norman invasion of England, 1066 CE.

Don't have the same meaning somehow.

"Shock", "Horror", "Erosion of our society"

Oh some of you do take things so seriously.

No hidden agenda intended, I just entered this news item so as to promote lively debate on a dull wet Sunday morning.
>>>>Should they be knocking down churches and mosques as well , just in case we athiest's are offended<<<<

Lets hope not eh!! I love churches, I often walk around churches, fantastic buildings, I would love to take a trip to the Neasden temple in London also.
I just cant help thinking of all the money spent on these buildings though, Im sure it could be put to better use in doing something for the people that actually need it.
VHG - that is nothing new either - the NHS has been using first or given name for years instead of the term Christian name. You only get a Christian name when you are Christened, after all....
The report starts by saying AD/BC have been dropped and ends by saying no guidance has been issued. I don't see the purpose of using CE/BCE since it uses a Christian starting point but this is the Mail stirring things again.
