If any of you remember the furore in the 60's over a young lad being birched on the Isle of Man it would be interesting, in the light of the latest "let's be more understanding to young offenders and reduce re-offending" nonsense, to find out if the IOM boy re-offended.
Does anyone know?

I dont know but the case of one boy being birched means absolutely nothing either way!
apart from the systematic and barbaric episode of child abuse that stains the history of the iom.
The IOM like Singapore are almost crime free countries. Nothing to do with discipline or harsh sentencing is it?
crime free now that the birching has stopped.
Similarly interesting to see if the woman who was to have been whipped for driving will reoffend now the sentence is commuted wouldn't you think Rich?

Or is beating women for breaking laws totally different to beating children for breaking laws?

Brilliantly unanswerable post.
Question Author
I do not condone beating either women or children, the question was about whether punishment achieved deterrence.
Smart arse comments were not invited.
SP, how about this (playing devils advocate here):

The woman made a conscious decision to break the law to make a point about something that was wrong.

Children tend to break laws through ignorance or to push the boundaries, it is all part of growing up.

So quite different maybe?
so one deserves a whipping, the other doesn't ?

not really following your logic.
