interesting debating point maybe - do the likes of Jonathan King and Gary Glitter, by dint of their odious criminality, forfeit the right to their place in pop history?

or would their exorcism itself be wrong? after all, Mr King and Mr Gadd were both accomplished showmen.

Would they have deleted reference to Sid Vicious? If he had lived he'd have been convicted of murder.
I'd say it's not the business of the BBC to be rewriting pop history.
Deleting Jonathan King from TOTP is hardly rewriting pop history!
My view is that we should not censor these programs - if a full repeat is being broadcast then it should be done warts and all.
Did Sid Vicious actually do anything though? AFAIK he couldn't even play! Aren't there question marks over the murder though?

JK wouldn't be missed but Glitter has some classics to his name.

we was not! I was in the other room at the time

No, nobody should rewrite any history at all. Pretending that number 7 on the charts was mysteriously unoccupied one week is just nonsense.
I believe the censorship of an artist's work on the basis of their personal life is wrong, because we should be able to separate the two aspects. If we censor for personal behaviour that means no more Wagner - an unremitting anti-Semite.

Anyone who is interested at all in pop music knows the history and lifestyles of Messrs. King and Gadd which should not interfere with their valid places in popular culture.

Mr King was right to protest - the BBC was right to apologise.
