You're serving yourself at the self service till , you have five or six medium to low cost items and a one of them won't scan properly. After trying a couple of times do you just pop it in the bag?

No, you call the assistant.
Agree with tboo, call the assistant. There is usually one close by anyway.

Er, wouldn't that trigger the 'unexpected item' alert?

Anyway, no, I don't. I accidentally pressed the wrong button on the fruit and veg selection last week, so that I'd have been getting my item at a few pence per kilo less than the true price. I called the assistant over to cancel my error, so that I could put it through at the correct price.
I pop it in the bag without even trying to scan it!

Joke. I don't use them. Hate, hate, hate them. Always end up messing it up, somehow.
And the "unexpected item in the bagging areacan be heard around the whole store! Mwahahaha!
No because then the machine shouts at you 'unexpected item in bagging area'. No shopping experience I've ever had has exasperated me more than the self service tills in Tesco, I swear at them, huff and puff and continue when the assistant comes over - yet I still keep using them !
I wouldn't anyway but if you put something on the conveyor belt, it registers as unknown item on the belt. It sometimes happens as I place something down and my handbag touches the belt. Allegedly they have CT cameras placed overhead so big brother is watching. Would you spoil your name for the sake of stealing an item?
It shouted at me when I took the full bag away too soon, because I needed to put in a fresh bag for the next lot of shopping.
If you don't scan something wouldn't the alarm beep when you go out of the door?
I hate these machines too and love to see a nice friendly face. I hope some of you here agree with me.
You wouldn't say that if you shopped at the Co-op Jonny.............
I couldn't disagree more, JB12.

I'll queue for ages to use the self-service tills rather than go to an 'ordinary' till!

Mwahahaha! - I haven't experience "unexpected item in bagging" - I'm clearly more honest than you lot!!
I have a Tesco 'Clubcard plus' which allows me to pay - but it is the only card that still needs a signature. As this is a pain when using the self scan tills I usually avoid them.

I am annoyingly honest though.
I agree, johnny... but not about the smiling face, bit.

I hate it when some jobsworth tells you to use the self-serve checkout, when you're more than happy standing in a 20 minute queue, just to avoid using it.
Craft:
A year or two ago I would have agreed with you. Most of the staff at our local Co-op were grumpy and unhelpful but they all seem to have gone, to be replaced by cheerful and efficient staff. (I'd still rather have self-service tills though!)

Can't stand these self service tills .
I suppose they are Ok for a few items .
I tried them once and I had a bottle of whisky .Then it kept shouting ..put the item in the bag .
I had my own bag :)
Then I got in muddle and someone came along to help and yelled out ..alcohol ...and everyone turns round and looks at you ..hahaaa
Well ....
I've not been back .)

No thanks .
