77? i thought it was 70million!
The Daily Mail seem to be in a bit of a tiz about this immigration thing. Is any government really going to allow the population to grow this quickly?

Based on the highest expected immigration, fertility and life expectancy levels, these put numbers in the country at 77,746,000 in 2035"
So it seems a range of projections were produced based on a range of assumptions. The 77 million figure is the highest figure produced. Lower end projections come in under 70 million.
With EU immigration beinga part of it, can the government do much about it? Maybe the recession will discourage some migrants from coming here.

We have little control nowadays.
Anyone from any other EU country can come here and we can do nothing about it.
And many people who come here on student visas and other short term visas can easily overstay their welcome and then "lose" themselves in one of the many immigrant ghettos we have in most cities.
As we saw recently, we lose control of our borders at times as well.
Also illegal immigrants can still smuggle themselves in in the back of lorries etc.
And because of our generous benefits system it "pays" immigrants to have as many childen as they can.
So all in all the future as regards the population looks bleak, and many of the "extra" people will not be indiginous but immigrants of one type or another (that is why 67% of the children in secondary schools in inner London are immigrants).

em, I wouldn't worry too much, here's a satellite view of London, although the big patch of grey looks pretty grim, it does hold over 10 million people and there's a whole load of green around it!

We need immigration because we have an aging population.
As that bulge of baby boomers works its way through unless we have younger people coming in the bottom there will be economic and social catastophe.
Sorry but people have just not been having enough kids - Unless you have 2 children that means you!
The challange is not stopping immigration but getting the right sorts of immigrants - skilled people who will come and bring young famillies.
People who just come over and send their earnings back home are just the same as importing from abroard

And the green needs to be there. Both for humans and other species. The idea ought not be if there is undeveloped land then there is no problem. There are issues with services already, both in supplying folk what they need and removing their waste. Sooner or later the human race needs to learn self control or else experience a natural disaster to balance everything again.
I disagree; we do not need immigration because of an aging population. That just runs the risk of pushing the problem into the future with larger numbers instead of tackling it now.
All we need is that the percentage of the population in work and generating wealth creates enough to cover the country needs. And since we already do not have 100% employment for those of an age to work, adding to the population won't help. We have the workforce already, we need to employ it to reap maximum benefit.
Clearly people have been having too many kids. If you have more than 1 child that means you.

Curiously though, Old-Geezer, there has been a significant reduction in the number of children of secondary school age and some schools are significantly under capacity. I know because I am a victim as teaching jobs are being cut back as a result. However there is a spike in the number of young primary school children (boosted by young immigrants having children).
I think some mathematicians may need to do some modelling to see what population mix we need bearing in mind the increase in life expectancy and should suggest steps we need to take, although I do think deciding how many children you should have just won't happen

exactly AOG
"Oh and it isn't just immigration that cause the population problem. Birth rate needs tackling too"
Its thier birth rate that causes a lot of the problem, they have more kids , a lot of them come here either already pregnant so they can stay here and breed even more or they get pregnant as soon as they are here.
just like where they have come from they will flood the place and then we will wonder why this country is in such a mess on all fronts

How many times must we have this debate, jake? You strike me as an intelligent person. I know we disagree vehemently on many issues, but I’ve always admired your logic, your reasoning and your arguing skills and I always relish reading your posts.
But how can you reasonably say that we need an ever-increasing number of young people here because we have an ever increasing number of old people with whom we cannot cope? It’s a preposterous argument. What happens to these youngsters that come here? Do they remain ever youthful as did Peter Pan? Err no...they get old!!! And then what? I suppose we ship in another load of youngsters to support them. And then? I think you can see my point.
The UK (and indeed the rest of the world) cannot sustain an ever increasing population. Governments must find a way to arrange their economies so that they can survive with a level, or preferably a slightly declining population. To say we need to import more people in a younger age group because we have too many people in an older group. Well, I’m speechless !!!
The economic and social catastrophe you forecast will be far worse if we bring in ever larger numbers of people. The UK has a housing shortage, a job shortage and is struggling with many infrastructure problems such as water provision, public transport, road congestion, education and health care provision. Almost all of these problems stem from over-population and the very last thing the country needs is an even greater number of new arrivals.

Factor30 you have put your finger on the real problem. Compound growth! Not only are we getting first time immigrants but also relatives of those who came 4 generations ago. These immigration figures are always an underestimate so the figure of 70million will be far exceeded.
We have all seen those pictures of bacteria in a petri dish where they expand exponentially. The same sort of expansion will happen with the human growth population unless we cut it off in its tracks.
