Sentence does not mean prison
You can be sentenced to community service for example
I think you mean why don't they get a full life term
There are a number of categories where full life terms are recommended such as serial killers or certain categories of child murder.

In this case it doesn't look as if there was substantial premeditation of pre- planning.
He was robbed and went to pick a fight with them after (not bright but never mind)
Do you really want to put that crime on the same level as someone who abducts, rapes and murders a child?

A current review of 'Hate Crime' could see the starting point for life sentence doubled to 30 yrs.
"The Act will also be updated so that where any offence is shown to be motivated by hostility towards the victim on the grounds of transgender, as well as race, religion, sexual orientation, and disability, sentences must be made more severe"

So you're suggesting that this crime *is* as serious as a child rapist and murderer who premeditates such a heinous crime?
These guys did not set out to murder their victim - if he hadn't decided to play "have-a-go-hero" he'd be alive today.
I'm not excusing their actions here but I think it's very important that punishments and crimes are proportionate and we don't lapse into a simplistic one size fits all sentencing policy

What this means is that ONLY after they have served a minimum of 28 or 29 years can the parole board start to consider if they can be released on licence.
The decision is likedly to take another year or more so they can not expect to be out in under 30 years.( Realistically more like 35 years.)
Even if they are released it will only be 'on licence' so they can be recalled if they get into any trouble again as they have been given 'Life'
What ever happens these 2 are not going to be out until they are pensioners into their mid to late 60s.

Life should mean life, full stop.
If we are to tackle these street stabbings seriously, these type of crimes should be treated with zero tolerance.
These two monsters murderously stabbed this father in the head with a screwdriver, one has to ask, "why were they carrying a screwdriver around with them"?

Here is another example of tariffs set for life sentences (see bottom of page on attached link).
Five teenagers, who fatally stabbed a pupil at the start of the school day, have today been sentenced to a total minimum of 76 years' imprisonment

"the law on joint enterprise is clear and unforgiving"
