Even green men are now offensive.
We are turning into a PC state that dictates everything we say and do and where everything is offensive to do gooders.
The problem is that too many on here and in real life are gutless to stand up to it.

This is a factual news story, and the general public should be allowed to know what 'Lefties' get up to, and how they waste our money on trivial and silly PC matters.
/// The light indicating when it is safe to cross the road has been renamed the “green figure” by road chiefs at Lincolnshire County Council. ///
Pathetic.

You have accused the Express of making this story up, I think their legal people would have to say something about that if you wasn't hiding behind your username, as you have accused others of doing.
/// Although some crossings retain the original labelling, the highways department has replaced many with the new gender-neutral version.///
/// Yesterday, Lincolnshire’s decision to change the signs was described as “political correctness gone mad”.///
/// Ossy Snell, a councillor in Boston, Lincs, said: “It seems a little bit like it’s seen as sexist.///
/// “Women might think men are controlling if a green man helps them to cross the road.///
Councillor Snell, is taking it all serious apparently.

As are quite a few of the 'usual suspects' on here, it seems.......
Yet another 'PC gone mad'......'we're all going to hell in a handcart'......'you couldn't make it up!'.......non-story.
Can't you all find something else to be outraged about on this, the last day, of 2011?

Do you never think to make basic checks before you post your incorrect nonsense?
// This is a factual news story, and the general public should be allowed to know what 'LEFTIES' get up to, and how they waste our money on trivial and silly PC matters.
The light indicating when it is safe to cross the road has been renamed the “green figure” by road chiefs at LINCOLNSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL. //
Lincolnshire County Council is Conservative run. They have 60 Councillors, while Labour have 4. No way this decision is down to Lefties.

"This is a factual news story"
Is it though?
The article opens with "But now the “green man” on pelican crossings seems to have fallen victim to the politically-correct brigade. The light indicating when it is safe to cross the road has been renamed the “green figure” by road chiefs at Lincolnshire County Council."
This is plainly presented as some new-fangled idea when, as plenty on this thread have already mentioned, it has been the case in the highway code for a long time.
"the general public should be allowed to know what 'Lefties' get up to, and how they waste our money on trivial and silly PC matters. "
I agree, but I think the public have the right not to be misled. Given that the OP (and, on other occasions, other ABers including you) has/have concluded from this event that "We are turning into a PC state that dictates everything we say and do and where everything is offensive to do gooders." This is quite an extreme claim, and it just isn't backed up by extraordinary evidence. Whenever the sinister and all-encompassing PC conspiracy is investigated just a little bit, it frequently seems about as elusive as that other famous conspiracy theory involving anthropomorphic lizards.
As I and others have said plenty of times before, it's a simple fact of life that many newspapers - especially tabloids of all political persuasions with a liking for these kind of stories - do make things up, or fail to check their facts etc. That's why it's important not to just assume they're reliable.

Kromovaracun, I'd add to this that the Christmas/New Year period, like midsummer, is a fallow period for news, and a certain amount of desperation is evident in some newspapers as they seek to fill space.
That said, I didn't know the bit about "pelicon" in the last paragraph, so aog's link has taught me something.

Pathetic, a decision made by someone with far too much time on their hands in their job
'Alan Bell, senior engineer at the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “We need to do all we can to help keep people safe on the county’s roads'
So women and children might be confused by seeing a green/red man and think it means only men can/cannot cross?
Maybe they need to change signs like this 'Pedestrians in Road' sign in Lincolnshire too?

......just in case drivers there think they only need to watch out for men walking with young girls in the road?

It is amazing how many of you do not know the Green X Code...
// There may be special signals for pedestrians. You should only start to cross the road when the GREEN FIGURE shows. If you have started to cross the road and the GREEN FIGURE goes out, you should still have time to reach the other side, but do not delay. //
