When a question is asked on AnswerBank, why do some ABers go to the trouble of just typing 'YES' or 'NO'.

If they can't put together a legitimate argument for their decision, why do they bother answering in the first place?

Spot on, Steve
Its called being succinct, which you are not with many of your questions.

And some of them merit just a "yes" or a "no."

Yes.
I blame the question posters. Say you want a discussion on youth unemployment. There are twoways of asking the the question.

1. Should the Government do something about youth unemployment?
2. What should the Government do about youth unemployment?

Question 1. Can be answered with a one word yes (or No), but question 2 invites a discussion and asks for opinions.
I think we should have a mass debate, but I suspect AOG would win as he is the biggest mass debater on the site.
People come on here for their own reasons. Some like to be part of a community or just fancy a little company. Even if they haven't a lot to contribute they may derive some pleasure in just belonging.

Good luck to anyone who comes on, unless they want to preach or show off.

By the way Yes or No are not the only answers. The other is Kiss my ****.
anotheoldgit, do you know what a closed question is?
the other day someones relative had beat up someone and asked for advice
i said keep ya hands to yourself and it was deleted!
This is from standard interviwing techniques training. Don't ask closed questions if you don't want yes/no answers.

This is not an interviewing site.

It is specifically for posting debatable questions, hoping that others will join in and make intelligent contributions.

Here are a few debating topics, notice that they can all be answered by either yes or no, but then that would not constitute a 'DEBATE'

http://www.idebate.or...abase/topic_index.php

Subject : Aboriginal Cultures, Treatment of

Question : Should Indigenous peoples be treated differentially?

Subject : Abortion

Question : Should abortion be permitted?

Subject : Abortion, Parental Consent

Question : Should parental consent be required for underage pregnant women to have abortions?

I think that clears that one up.
No.

well even in that thread ludwig posted an erudite and well thought out opinion.

the resulting debate was mainly you whinging about everyone's answers.

Not 'everyone's'

Only those who would would rather play out their rather childish games, than join in a more mature and intelligent debate.

These individuals are ruining this once enjoyable and recreational site, and turning it into a type of junior classroom activity, that of writing naughty things on scraps of paper and passing them amongst their equally silly friends.
From what I have seen you dont really want to debate anything AOG, just pull to pieces anybody's opinion that is not the same as your own and try to look clever in the process.
"that of writing naughty things on scraps of paper and passing them amongst their equally silly friends. "

sounds like the daily mail tagline!
Absolutely
Anything more than 'yes' or 'no' might prompt the OP to ask to have their answer deleted.
I'm with grasscarp on that one.
You spend so much time duplicating other peoples posts and asking closed questions that its becoming tedious.
