Why does he feel this way

My male friend recently had a baby.
Long story short we were together 3yrs.
Broke up. He started dating someone else.
3 months later she got pregnant. It wasnt planned. She has three kids to someone else. My guy was upset that it wasnt planned and didnt want a family with her. But he knew it takes two and is there 100% for the child. But on the other hand we still love each other. We were gonna try and work it out but recently he keeps stating
- he can't be there for me emotionally right now
-doesn't want any expectations
-we shouldn't try to work anything out right now
-he has nothing to offer me right now because he doesn't have anything himself
Why does he feel this way? I dont want much from him but his Love and that's it. What can I do to change his mind or let him know I want to be with him, love him, and be happy. He keeps saying not right now. I tell him should I move on, he says "im not telling you too'' and that he wants to show me he can be a better man. He still calls/texts. Tells me he loves me Should I wait?

No. Don't waste your life waiting for him. He has other responsibilities now and if he can't be there for you and has no expectations, he's trying to let you down gently, and he's not man enough to tell you it's finished.
