There seems to be some misunderstan ding here about the stand-by requirements for the capacity intermittent ly and unpredictabl y provided by wind-farms. Gas and coal-fired power stations (and for that matter nuclear as well) cannot be switched on and off when the wind fails and then resumes. They have to maintain “spinning standby” in order to be...

I like windfarms and I don't like the National Trust- so bad story for me. Still each to his own, I only hope the silly old s0ds who are in the National Trust, won't be the first ones to start moaning when all the fossil fuels run out and they have no electric- oh wait no, they won't will they because they'll all be dead by then, it'll be their grandchildren left to tidy up the mess they've left.
I used to be in favour of wind farms but I have changed my mind.
Wind farms do not stop power stations being built, there has to be 'back up' generation capacity for days when the wind is too strong or too low. So for every kilowatt of wind power there has to be another Kilowatt of conventional capacity created.

Not exactly an efficient system.

Vulcan- if the infrastructure can't cope then improve the infrastructure- don't tear down the only part of it that's functioning in a clean, environmentally friendly way because the rest is too naff to keep up. If we all thought like that we'd still be living in round houses and painting ourselves with woad.
Any sensible energy policy needs to have a diverse combination of sources. No single one works on its own. With wind power as one of the options, it gives us the ability to use less fossil fuels to generate energy at certain times. I am also pleased the Government recently lost its slashing of Solar Power subsidy.
I was once a member of the National Trust but realised they were all small c conservatives.
