Suarez - a question from a complete football ignoramus
This is what I have gathered from speaking to some of the lads at work.
Suarez was suspended for making racist comments to a player called Patrice Evra, and the next time they meet, rather than shaking Evra's hand, he refuses to touch it.
Right so far?
So, am I alone in thinking it would've been a much cleverer tactic for Suarez to have grabbed Evra's hand with both hands, and hugged him? It would've told the everyone, "Look - I have no problem with this player...it was blown all out of proportion".
Instead, it seems now the story has 'developed legs'.
As someone who finds football tedious - am I along the right lines, or is there more to this story?

Ferdinand was sulky as well but sulkiness that is not what this controversy is about.
SP. //Instead, Suarez comed over as a sulky kid, and then at the end of the game (becuase of his over-exuberant celebrations) came across as...what's word...'overly gleeful'? //
You are mixing up the wrong player. It was Evra who was gleefully over-celebrated.

// "In effect, most of the Man.United players shook hands with a Racist, nobody seems to have mentioned that" //
That is not entirely fair. Most agree Suarez is not racist, but he may have used some inappropriate language. This does indeed all seem unnecessary. The owners have had to come in like an headmaster and bang a few heads together.

I don't believe anyone should be forced to shake another's hand if they are offended by the thought of doing so. If a club makes a promise it can't deliver on then more fool it. You are probably correct that the overly enthusiastic handshake would have avoided more fuss but I think it should be considered a non-story anyway. Let folk old enough to make their own decisions do just that.

Suarez was suspended for:
1. Mr Suarez used insulting words towards Mr Evra during the match contrary to FA Rule E3(1);
2. the insulting words used by Mr Suarez included a reference to Mr Evra's colour within the meaning of Rule E3(2)
Which does not necessarily make him a racist. He just went too far trying to wind Evra up. A simple apology and the ban probably would not have been given.

no I know Zeuhl, and, it seems, that nobody in Uruguay considers what Suarez admitted saying to be racist. I was trying to point out that it's the sentiment behind it.
Ivor - it was because the FA decided that Evra's side of the story sounded a little more believable than Suarez's. No facts, no foundation, just basically siding with Evra..who went on to say himself that he doesn't believe that Suarez is racist. Were you on that panel by any chance? You seem to have the same level of regard for facts vs. the desire to sling mud!

No, it was a FA disciplinary hearing. All players and staff agree to play by the FAs rules at the start of each season. If they do not they face a hearing at the FA. It is a self policing system and Liverpool FC had the right to make an appeal. It is not a Kangaroo Court, it is wholly transparent and the reasons for the judgement were made available to everyone. The people complaining are the ones who think you can ignore the rules if you do not like them.

Gromit, I'm not complaining for that reason, I'm complaining because some of the 'evidence' and 'expert opinion' is dunious to say the least.
I appreciate the club could appeal and never and everyone is taking that as a sign of guilt but that's just another assumption being made over the whole thing. Far, far, far too many assumptions!
