another voting question

sorry guys!  I was just wondering if anyone voted in pencil?  My polling station doesn't have pens, only wee stubby pencils and I was wondering how safe this is.  I mean, it wouldn't take much to rub it out.  It doesn't seem very secure to me.  I wrote to my MP after the local elections last year, asking if there was a reason and I didn't get a reply.

Surely it can't be a matter of cost?  Pens are cheaper then pencils these days.

Morrisonker a pencil is the usual method, like you said mind, what's to stop the cross being erased?

It's not just any old pencil.  It's a special type of indelible pencil which cannot be rubbed out.  It was designed specifically for the purpose.  Sometimes people make mistakes about who they are voting for, and it is OK to scribble out one cross and write in a second one - as long as the intention of the voter is clear.
