I don't beleive people are naive enough to think that this doesn't go on.

Parties need to get funding from somewhere. If a large donation ensures a dinner party invite, so what?
The wealth creators have, as a rule, always backed the right, and the unions have always backed the left. Both provide funding. Both could suggest policy.
