Even at 644 it is small number per capita

Official Home Office figures:
The fall in the murder rate in the 12 months to September 2010 was accompanied by a 9% fall in gun crime and a 6% fall in knife offences. The 619 deaths recorded on the homicide index was the lowest since the 606 murders in 1997/98. In 2009/10 , 421 victims were male and 198 were female.

The murder rate in England and Wales over the past 50 years rose steadily from around 300 a year in the early 1960s to more than 1,000 in 2002/03 when 172 deaths were attributed to the activities of Dr Harold Shipman. They have declined sharply since that peak with the fall in domestic violence providing part of the explanation for the decline.

So nothing remotely ressembling a 'massive increase'

In Florida with its executions and life without parole the murder rate is 5.2!

if they put him away for life, surely that will mean life, as to being rehabilitated, why? he shot dead two people in cold blood, that is as bad as it gets. If my son was killed in this way i would want him dead

Yes, those poor men must have gone through hell having to plead for their lives like that. Gone forever because of this scumbag. I too would want him locked away for good if he did this to a member of my family.

But the people killed were not our children.

That is the point. Law is best made by people who are objective and rational not involved and upset.

Otherwise people would be beaten to death for dropping litter outside my house.

zeuhl, we don't have the death penalty in Britain so it would never happen, but they do in USA in many states, and if my child was brutally murdered i would want that person taken out of the picture. No messing, a life for a life.

then you would be understanding if they wanted to take your child out and hack him to pieces?

that is not the same, and no one gets a choice as to the sentence of that person, so family have no input. I said i would want him gone and i meant it, i didn't say that it would happen because i wished it. A bloke kills two other blokes, and he should get life at the very least.

those that get killed by a motorist by careless drivers often don't end up in jail, which i think they should. It might make others think about their driving if they knew the sentence could be a long one.

Zeuhl i would want the man dead, a life for a life, can't be clearer than that. It wouldn't happen i know, because we do not have the death sentence here. But had i been in the USA, and if that was what the state sanctioned then i would be for it. Sorry we are dancing around something that isn't going to be resolved.

sorry em, i appreciate that, i think most of us would if we were in that situation.
I'm still wondering what relevance (if any) you think the feelings of people in that particular situation has to the debate on sentencing.

Having read all of the posts here I can honestly say that if this guy or any other had brutally killed a relative of mine I would with great pleasure throw the switch or pull the lever to separate him from his breath. When an animal like a mad dog or a tiger kills mankind they are condemned to be put down to stop them doing it again. Shawn Tyson is without doubt worse than any wild animal because he was completely aware of what he was doing & forfeited his life when he took 2 innocent lives he should suffer the extreme penalty & I hope that he gets his comeuppance whilst serving his prison sentence. I am tired of hearing the excuses of do-gooders & I wish we could have a society where these low life's could be kept under control more.
