Cigarette Displays Ban
Will the ban really discourage youngsters from smoking? Probably not. Will more people stop smoking because of this new ruling? Probably not. No doubt that some smokers who do not necessarily have a favourite brand, will be unable to compare prices in the future. And packets which may carry a promotion, will be hidden from the consumer.
My local supermarket have a sliding door cabinet holding the cigarettes. I'm sure the assistant will soon be bored with opening it just for a packet of fags!
Yet the 'small' shopkeepers have another three years' grace before they are obliged to hide the ciggies. Strange law that - one rule for one and one rule for others. Typical though and government-consistent.

The main emphasis should be on the young to stop them smoking. They tried horrific images on the packet but that was not enough. Maybe a repeat of that advert showing a dying man with cancer in his lungs might help. Or even a trip to the hospital where smokers are dying and on ventilators could convince many not to smoke.

This is bad news for the non smokers brigade. As the sales of cigarettes decline even more, they and us will have to pay more tax on something else.
I seem to remember reading something a few years ago that said if alcohol and tobacco were banned we would all be paying at least 35p tax in the pound as a result.
Makes you think.

Current smokers are addicted and will not stop until they die, we need to stop kids from starting. This and the plain packs will help that.
Smoking has to be seen in the same light as drink driving. Ten years or so ago drink driving was seen as something to boast about, I was so p*ssed I could see 2 roads !, and similar brags. Now it is hardly above paedophilia as a social 'no no' smoking will come to be seen in the same light.
I already find it hard to belive that we once allowed smoking in pubs.

I personally think if anything it will glamorise smoking to kids by making it all a bit cloak and dagger and forbidden- but it's their latest little gimmick in trying to persuade folk to be more healthy- I'd prefer to see kids encouraged to be individuals at school as I think that would have far more effect in them being able to make their own minds up about it, but what do I know aside from the fact none of my kids smoke.
