With increasing numbers of police officers facing charges of racism, what is the answer?

Can racism ever be completely eradicated from our various institutions, or is it a sad fact of general human behaviour, taking into account of course that racism is not just confined to any particular race, country, or colour of skin?

To say that someone has a Black skin is not racist. To say that it is-IS racist !!
No one should be surprised that there is a small amount of racism in the Police Service. An organisation that employs 31,500 officers and 15,000 civilian employees is bound to have some people who are unsuitable for the job.

All they can do, is do what they are doing already. When employees are found who do not reach the required standard are detected, they are removed, and having not fulfilled their part of the employment contract, it is not renewed.

Part of the problem is that Chief Constables and managers have tried to portray the Police has clean of racism when that is not true and impossible to deliver.
Correction:
I thought 31,500 police officers sounded low and I have re-checked. That is the figure for just the Metropolitan Police, the service in England is 137,500 strong.
Sorry the answer in NONE, while our major organistions carry out their own investigations. All major employers Companies as well as Police should be investigated by an external body comprising man/woman-in-the-street and legally learned personnel. They should encourage whistle-blowers and have sub-teams to screen real complaints from time-wasters. Note "blacks" or "coloureds" are happy to be called so and proud of it. Such terms are not raciast in my eyes, just a fact of melanin pigmention of the skin and should imply nothing about character, intelligence or anything else. Many racists will happily see a black or coloured doctor/dentist if they are ill or in pain - indeed they have to most of the time as these people keep the NHS alive.
None, because racism will always exist in society at large; there will always be somebody who is racist, though racism diminishes. One senior officer said, on Radio 5, that the majority of very recent complaints where action was being taken had been instigated by colleagues of the person reported, which is encouraging (but he didn't say how many of those reporting were themselves black, which would have strengthened his claim). And he only cited 10 complaints !

That any officer is the subject of racism 'charges', is itself miraculous to me, who knew the Met of 40 years ago. Not only was racism not being pursued in disciplinary proceedings, it was casually accepted and not recognised as anything out of the ordinary. That's because it wasn't 'out of the ordinary'. It wasn't so long ago that 'institutional racism' was first mentioned in a report on the Met, after all.
If you believe in Labour policies they have done a good job. They allowed unfettered immigration into the country, so much so, that from a small minority they mingle in all sorts of life and now most are assimilated. Mixed marriages are now the norm and the offspring of dark parents get paler with each generation. Maybe this is a good thing as we'll all be looking like sun tanned southern Europeans within the next few generations.

Are we talking of a Senator Joseph McCarthy communist type witch hunt here?
No. Some people are simply obsessed with people's ethnicity, or religion, or sexuality.

Sad, but true.
In answer to anotheoldgit, I have noticed in the past that you always twist the meaning of answers you don't like. Of course I was not proposing the crazy ideas of Joe McCarthy in my answer. I was proposing independent rather than internal investigations. If these were in place when McCarthy's accusations of communism against liberal Americans he would have been disgraced earlier. He met his match when he tried to "cleanse the US Army of communism". That's where he met his match when the Army filed a suit against him before the Supreme Court. This INDEPENDENT body found in favour of the Army and he was ridiculed and disgraced. By the way, Ronald Reagan was a keen and active McCarthite in Hollywood.
Before drawing odd conclusions from sensible answers you should, if possible, learn your history and read our anwers carefully before shooting from the lip.
Anyone agree with me on this in the light of my earlier answer. Also is anotheold git a closet racist?
aog, do you believe that a body, constituted and acting as described, would falsely accuse people of being secret sympathisers with racism, as McCarthy accused people of sympathising with communism? If so, what are the grounds for that belief ?

And do you further believe that that body would use his tactics, such as falsifying evidence and making threats, against those accused? If so, What are your grounds for that belief ?

(You used the phrase 'McCarthy style', so I ask what 'style' means to you in that phrase )

Does any objection you have to whistle-blowers include whistle-blowers who report racism shown by others?

You are new to these parts (though I notice you have been on the site since 2008). AOG (as he is affectionately abbreviated) is interested in racial issues. 80% of his posts are about foreigners whether they be highly fertile muslims or young black criminals (AKA savages). If you bother to stick around, you will get used to him. Do not take his hostility personally, he is like that with everyone with a different opinion than his own. i like your answers, so it would be good if you paid us a visit more often.

Though I disagree with most of what he posts (and he mine), the news section would not be the same without him.

There's one easy solution for you Andy, just stop continuously going on about them then.

No I am not particularly interested in racial issues as some have suggested, and no I don't twist things around if I do not agree with them.

What I do not like to see are posters defending certain minority groups no matter what they have done, I also don't approve of certain groups getting the protection that others do not equally enjoy.

I am also against Nazi type actions that encourage certain people to shop others, if they happen to utter a word or phrase that is deemed unacceptable to only a minority of the community.

I will also refuse to be silenced into submission by the 'Left' just because I happen to take a different viewpoint to theirs, in a free society persons are allowed to take an opposing view without constantly being labelled racist, homophobic, bigoted or any other supposedly insulting label, designed specifically to try and stifle free speech.
Is that Elgar I can hear in the background..........?
aog, do you regard encouraging others to report crimes as a bad thing?

Some racist acts and statements with intent are crimes. Do you object to laws which make them so ?

/// aog, do you regard encouraging others to report crimes as a bad thing? ///

That is dependant on what one classes as a crime, I do not class all measures that the state have made illegal as crimes per se.

/// Some racist acts and statements with intent are crimes. Do you object to laws which make them so ? ///

I agree with laws that protect an individuals rights, their safety and well being, or laws that make it illegal to threaten others safety.

But I object to laws that only make insulting 'words' against only one part of the community unlawful.

Words alone are not physically damaging or life threatening, they also cannot be any more harmful to some when they are not to others.
"But I object to laws that only make insulting 'words' against only one part of the community unlawful."

What laws are they then? If you can give the name of the Acts, I'll have a look.
Dear Gromit, thank you for your advice regarding AOG. I'll bear that in mind in future. I do not take AOG's comments personally in fact I like stirrers like him - they really do add life to this great site. In fact I like to rattle cages myself and see who squawks first. You are right that I am new to the new format, having previously joined when I was only interested in Crosswords. However I gave this up as all the relevant questions were already answered so could not fairly help, only ask for help. Sorry about the stupidly arrogant and just plain wrong name but cannot change it though I've tried. Kind regards.
"No I am not particularly interested in racial issues as some have suggested ..."

I think I need to redefine my interperetation of the phrase 'not particularly interested' - it is obviously seriously different from yours AOG!
Police officers have a Police Officers Association. There is also a black police officers association, and an Asian polic officers association. This just underlines their diversity and enhances their seperation. Why not just one Association for all of them whatever their colour.
