Zacs, what a fantastic story, while I agree with Sqad, one can not forget the other aircraft that served us well during the Battle of Britian , the spit holds all the glory and romance. I hope they make their way back to the UK.
No I don't Zac-Master because it would be too long. I am simply entitled to leave a comment (agreeable or not) otherwise you shouldn''t start a thread in the first place if you expect certain answers?

I am not getting drawn into an argument. Have a good weekend.
Wow, great story.
As a former Royal Military Policeman whilst training in Chichester my driving instructor took me to Tangmere Airfield for my initial lessons.
Spits were seen around the area and were a magnificent sight.
Coupled with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, which has no comparable sound, the Spitfire was and still is the most aesthetically shaped and sounding fighter plane in history.
Am I beng naive in thinking that this has surfaced due to Cameron's visit and intervention so he will ensure they are repatriated and kept in UK?
It will be interesting to see if they are truly preserved; being in jungle podsol is not the same as being buried in, say, the tundra.

If you don't want to get drawn into an argument, you shouldn't post totally irrelevant comments. Jeez, some people.

Prudie, I'm sure MrC has grasped the opportunity to boost his ratings. What politician wouldn't.
Well he'd have certainly shot himself in the foot if he doesn't Zacs.
Then story does not say they were Jets , it says they were mothballed as they went out of use '' due to the introduction of more agile (ie faster) jets''

Eddie, it's been edited. See chucks earlier post.
Political discussions and valued historic finds are seperate issues and I feel sure both can progress with little affect on the other. But yes I'm sure the announcent timing was deliberate. Any reasonable cost is acceptable to obtain them for museums and allow future generations the ability to see what some brave airmen flew. It'd be a vanishingly small fraction of GDP.
Zacs, just remembered there was a car around in the mid to late 70s ( one off ) that was built and it was called '' The Beast '', i can remember a photo of it being on the front cover of a magazine called '' HOT CAR '' about 1977 if i remember rightly, and it had got the R.R. Merlin engine fitted.
tonyav,
I saw that very car last year at the Cholmondley Pageant of Power, a week or so after it was mentioned on Top Gear.
It's name is very apt!
Thats great Philtaz, i didn't know it was still around, did they run the engine ?.
wow seadragon what a dullard you must be, I'm so glad you are not in my life, you must be a wow at xmas!
Would make an excellent 'Time Team' dig, such a change from the usual change in soil colourisation they generally film.
Question Author
Tony - I remember that car and the magazine (a little bit naughty if I remember)

AOG - what a very good idea.
That was custom car magazine Zacs, not that i ever looked at mind you lol.

Ah, yes you're right. An older cousin used to pass them on when he'd done with them. Very racey for a young teenage boy!
Yep, i used to love those center fold spreads.Only for the cars you understand lol.
