Life should mean life ?. Trouble is that full life terms for all would not distinguish between murders. The man who killed 20 on a shooting spree or who abducted, abused, and killed several chidren, would be treated the same as one who intended to cause really serious bodily harm with one heavy blow to the face, but who killed the victim, though he neither foresaw nor intended death.

That's why some (most, in fact, if I recall aright) murderers were spared the death penalty, obligatory for all murders; the Home Secretary distinguished between the various murders and murderers. What's more, those who were spared did not necessarily serve a full life term. Judges have the power now to make such a distinction with 'life' sentences.

Making death a capital offence and then usinG the same act being disapproved of as punishment will never be anything other that hypocritical. And since society disapproves of taking life as the crime of murder proves, just a punishment is clearly wrong. That's never going to change no matter how often however many cry out for vengeance rather than what is morally correct. Society ought not judge what it should do by the actions of the most depraved within society. It has a duty to do the right thing.

I am very anti capital punishment generally as I too find it an hypocrisy that I can't stomach, however that doesn't mean that I have a shred of sympathy or pity for this monstrosity or that I couldn't weep for what happened to that wee lad. I don't however think there is any deterrent as such for a situation like this as someone so out of whack that they will vent their anger on a child to any never mind about such a degree is unlikely to be thinking about any possible consequences for themselves. I just hope he manages to die in prison of his own accord so he's not a problem if he's ever released.
