I saw this on the DM home page, but didn't read beyond the first line as I knew it would just make me cross. I've been looking for official figures, and have found that last year's census suggested that for every 1000 boys born, there were 914 girls; that's less than a 9% difference.
so is there really a problem involving the destruction of female offspring as the DM suggests? or is the imbalance small enough to be explained by natural variation, and so is the DM just off on a rant?

Eddie, it's what i said, we should be smug over this, it is happening here.
There are many countries who do not value women, after all when did women finally get the vote here, 1928, not exactly treating us as equal eh?
Nor still in many areas, but this imbalance of population is beginning to bite them on the backside so to speak.

em10 totally agree with you but in practice stopping it is going to be hard.
The doctors just make up a medical reason to do the termination, once it has been done there can be no proof. Also some doctors have been quoted as saying that just the woman insisting she can not go on with the pregnancy is reason enough to do a termination. That could be classed as '' Mothers Mental Health Issues'' which can be a legitimate reason for termination.
There is also evidence of women traveling back to India/Pakistan to get a termination where it is not illegal and considered a normal means of birth control.
