It was unusual to witness the the demise of certain members of the Royal Family, on what could be the last balcony appearance the Queen ever makes.

I would have thought at least that she would have had her other three children (Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward) by her side.

Apparently it was a deliberate choice to show only those in very direct line As a statement the line continues in safe haands perhaps but I suspect to lessen the impact of all the peripheral players who are seen by some as 'hangers on'

tongue in cheek or not, I think you're basically right, aog: the ones on the balcony are the ones who give the customers value for money. Having the likes of golfing ambassador Andy or fascinating Beatrice up there would not have brought much pleasure to the nation, though their presence at the royal wedding was appropriate.

It only needs so many royals to shake hands or cut ribbons. No wonder the Royals live to a ripe old age when they are faced with exhausting chores like these.
