He will be allowed to drive again for the same reason that he will be allowed out of prison at some time in the future. Whilst his offence is horrendous and he technically could have been banned for life, the sentencing guidelines (by which the judge is bound when considering both the length of custody and any ancillary orders such as a driving ban) do not countenance such a penalty

Also - you have to consider...after killing a child by driving like a maniac, what's the chances he'll come out of jail, get his licence back and do the same?

Another thing - with that on his record, the chances of him being able to afford insurance at any point in the short to medium term, is very slight.

I agree. He should have been banned for life. The death of a child and the consequences for the parents must be taken into account in something like this. It's different for someone who hadn't killed.

sp1814 - skyhigh insurance won't stop someone like this - they just drive without any insurance at all. If he's banned for life then he'd go to jail for a long time if he got caught driving at any time.

Just watched Look North. The child's Grandfather said, IF HE HAD SHOT HIM HE WOULD HAVE GOT LIFE, but he killed him with a car so he only got 5 years. Where is the justice in that.

If it were my child I'd feel the same but take some consolation that 5 years is a very stiff sentence in comparison to the norm.

but how many times do you see on Police, Camera, Action or Road Wars, somene driving with nothing? No license, no MOT, no insurance? They only get a tickle on the wrist. And this dude could borrow someone else's car that has up to date tax and insurance and unless he drives again like a tit-head he is unlikely to get a tug off plod. ANPR won't flag him.

That tugs at the heart strings. A little life snuffed out by a piece of cr4p who has no respect for the law or for society. Pity he cannot be strung up. What is five years? Not enough at all.
