/// More than 15 million people in the south and east of England will be able to fill paddling pools and water lawns again when hosepipe bans are lifted on Thursday. ///

Why do we have to wait until tomorrow before the hosepipe bans are lifted?

Surely the bans could have been lifted from the moment it was announced?

i would think that filling paddling pools are the last things on some people's minds. seeing as how the pictures of flood damaged properties across some of the south east shows them under water and seriously in need of help.
No doubt they wanted to give time for the information to be disseminated to, and understood by, every jobsworth who was supposed to enforce the ban, (and to all nosey neighbours who would grass on anyone watering their grass).
Incidentally, Cambridge Water never imposed a ban. No idea why this area was exempt; the east of the county is nearly the driest in England, parts of Essex, the next county, being driest. Perhaps they think we're adjusted to desert life! More likely, they looked out of the office window and saw the downpours.
My lawn is begging me not to water it and my paddling pool drowned some weeks ago. I can think of very few people in the east who will rush to get their hosepipes out whether it be today, tomorrow or next Tuesday.

Leave it in I say and build up the reserves. Now that we're used to it why give us permission to go back to washing our cars with drinking water?
"parts of Essex, the next county, being driest."

Trust me, they've not been dry for the last couple of weeks!
"Trust me, they've not been dry for the last couple of weeks!"

Heck, ain't that the truth, strewth it's been pouring it down here in Essex :(
With the water companies selling off our reservoirs to make more profits maybe they should have an indefinate ban so we can prepare for the next drought.
Yes, Lisa-Louise, but you're dry really LOL The place with the lowest rainfall in Britain (500mm a year, as if you're interested) is in Essex (St Osyth). And guess what ? It hasn't had a hosepipe ban, just as Cambridge (560 mm) hasn't. Well, we wouldn't have; any rain in the desert is a bonus, and our thinking is different.
The underground water levels in parts of the East are still critically low, so not everyone is having the ban lifted.

The ground was so dry and like concrete that the heavy rain just runs off into the rivers.
