not fat people per-se, but the industrial scale agriculture that permitted their propagation. Modern agriculture is driven by oil (for farm machinery) and nitrogen based fertilisers (produced using the haber-bosch process and a great deal of oil based energy). When oil begins to run out, modern agriculture will fail and along with it, the artificially high population level that it's been sustaining for the past 100 years.

Misuse of water supplies . The Aral sea was destroyed by extraction of water from the rives that fed it. The upper reaches of rivers are being diverted thus reducing the amount available down stream.
