The first bit in weeks and it took all of 10 minutes
IMO she doesn't get enough although she is supposed to read each evening. It's not really relevant for her as she is at a reading age way ahead of her peers
She reads for enjoyment now, not because she has to

why does it differ from school to school if each school is following the same year 3 curiculum then surely homework would be set out accordingly?the homework is all about the main subject they have covered that week plus the usual sums and spelling my daughter goes to a mainstream in a deprived area so its not like its a fantastic school academically.
According to my neighbour, who looked into this recently, there is little or no academic benefit to homework in primary school. The only benefits are that parents are closer to what their child is learning and that it gets children into a routine for High school and further education.
Been a few years since mine were that age but in general they had reading, spelling words, sentences and some maths every week - about 15 minutes worth a day and sometimes projects on top so probably pretty similar to what your daughter has.

Sorry, meant to say that the reason he looked into it was that the sent out a questionairre asking parents what they thought about the type/level and amount of homework with a view to perhaps getting rid of it - there was no clear concensus so they went back to doing what they always do.......i voted to get rid :o)
We (me and himself) are both ex-teachers and think that homework is a waste of time. At primary level I don't mind some reading when they are learning to read or even some times table practice but otherwise it tends to be busy work that is dished out because the school thinks it should set homework. Coursework at secondary level is also ok in my book.
sher, my neighbour is a reasearch boffin - if he says there is no benefit then I believe him! maybe for kids whose parents would otherwise take no interest it encourages them to spend time with them - but on the other hand, those kids probably either don't bother or get on with it themselves anyway.
Sherrard, that's why I asked. My daughter was at boarding school. Her 'preparation', 'prep', was just what the name suggests. It was in a period set aside and was essentially 'read this/ get this bit ready for tomorrow', rather than do great wodges of written work, going over what they'd already done (as my day school homework so often was). It was all done in a set, relaxed, period, and no long time was allocated or required.
One of my children is in year 3 and does maybe five minutes homework a week (if that). Antother of my children in in year 7 and does maybe 15 minutes a week (he does his in class while the others are finishing their class work). (Also, any homework set should back up what is being learnt at the time, not any old worksheet just dished out.)
well exactly joko the research my daughter has to do quite simply she doesnt want to so its me that does all the research ive learnt alot though in the last year!!seriously i had a word with the teacher earlier on in the year and said my girl doesnt like the homework and teachers response was really that surprises me all the kids do it!!well im off to research egyptian patterns now .
Well, what ever HW my 8 yr old does get she does herself or she suffers the consequence if it's not done!
Doing her homework now us teaching her what, exactly? What will happen when she continues to say 'I dont want to' and you go ahead and do it for her?
Simply let her take the responsibility for it along side any punishment she may get as well

Are you for real?? so you just do it for her because she cant be bothered? seriously?
you are teaching her a terrible terrible lesson!
she moans and has a little strop and gets out of doing anything she doesnt want to do - because mummy dearest will do it for her!
how do you think that would go down in her first job?
goes to the bosses office "awww this is dead boring, i dont want to do it, can you do it for me?"
what do you think would happen?
itd be a lot more serious than the lines or detention shed get now!
and you had the nerve to tell the teacher she didnt like the work?!
im gobsmacked!
what were you expecting them to do? change the syllabus? change all school work to suit your daughters mood? pick out all the easy, fun bits for her?
whats the point of that?
she's not supposed to 'want' to do it, or even particularly like it - if that was the case kids wouldnt need school at all - as theyd just learn it all themselves!
let HER do it and if she doesnt let her take the consequences...
or just take her out of school all together as clearly its pointless if you do it all anyway.
she is probably laughing her head off at you.

Shouldn't think the are many kids who do like homework - tough luck. If mine get it, they do it and they do it properly. Does she say she WON'T do it or do you just automatically do it for her (if she won't do it then you need to nip that it the bud) - either way you've go to get it sorted out (mine wouldn't dream of saying they weren't doing it).
