Is this a good idea or is it fraught with problems?
Would it also be a good idea to link benefit payments regionally – which would mean less money going to claimants who live in less-expensive parts of the country?

What we should do is enable people to move around with Tax breaks and remove stamp duty on house purchases. In addition we should invest in good quality 'council housing' that is affordable but not cheap and cannot be sold on the cheap either.
Your idea sounds good but wold be impossible to implement. We need to simplyfy systems not complicate them as that is how fraud starts.

/// Another controversial reform which could come in further down the line is setting benefit payments regionally – which would mean less money going to claimants who live in less-expensive parts of the country. ///
What a brilliant idea. All the winos, scroungers and feckless can go to London and be paid more. That would improve every community in the UK with the possible exception of the South East. Somehow, I suspect that looney policy will not see light of day.

Many years ago when I was young (here I go again) young people lived at home with their parents until t hey either got married, or, when older and more affluent could afford a high rent. It took two salaries for a married couple to afford their rent or mortgage!!
Nowadays it seems that single young people think they have the right to be able to afford to buy or rent their own homes and finance it solely by themselves.
I cannot see the problem with axing housing benefits for the manority of the under 25s.
We live in an instant gratification society, people want, want, want and they want it now. It just don't work!!

Do you seriously think that, where would be the sense in it? They may get paid more but it would also cost more to live in London.
That is what's behind the idea, or didn't you understand that?

All for reducing benefits to make work more 'profitable' but where are the jobs coming from ? The real unemployment figures are several million higher than the government official ones. Most unemployed people over 50 are not on the lists, I for example have a wife who gets DLA so I get carers allowance tp look after her , I can not claim anything but in reality I am unemployed. Anyone who has a partner who works or is eligable for benefit can not sign on and there are 100.000s of us (10 in my street alone1)
Hi AOG. Been around, but recently had a Russian holiday and came back only to have caught a Russian type flu virus. Also trying to keep abreast of gardening, which is difficult in this awful summer. AB is more of a winter hobby for me.
Hi Lottie
Hope you enjoyed your holiday, sorry to hear you have been poorly, what is this Russian type flu, does it make you 'RED' all over? :0)
Yes must admit I would rather be out enjoying my garden while soaking up the sun, than sitting here on my computer.

Fraught with problems in my opinion.
I have a 23 year old daughter who is a single parent to two young boys (partner left her), she lives in a housing association house and claims HB to top up her rent as her wages from her part time job don't cover the rent. She has been looking for a full time job for months and there is nothing going in our area. If HB was removed from under 25s she would be unable to pay her rent and would be evicted onto the streets. We can't take her in as we live in a tiny two bed terraced house (3 of us) and there is no room for her and the boys. Where are they supposed to live?
She is not the only one in this situation by any means and this proposed change to HB would result in a huge amount of homeless families.

It is ironic that they are thinking of increasing benefits to those who live in London, yet the London allowance for our armed forces rank of sergeant and above and stationed in London, was axed last April.

I bet the MPs still receive their more than generous London allowances.

Under 25's on low or no income have the same problems as those over 25 on low or no income. Coming up with an age to axe such benefits would be another thing crossed off of the list as to what we pay our taxes for.
With so many cuts being made to save a billion here and there but billions can then just be thrown at the Euro, we are getting to the stage where taxes we pay are serving no purpose other than to fund other countries.
Having enough jobs in the first place and giving people a decent living wage would help reduce the number of claimants we have. I do find it interesting though that the people that usually complain about those recieving any benefit have never been in that position themselves.
The recent RBS Natwest banking meltdown was met by me with great pleasure. Seeing the aforementioned individuals bellyaching they have no money or can't pay this and that gave them a nice insight into what many others in this country experience daily.

Those who were 'bellyaching' as you put it, were not the 'stinking rich' they were the ordinary hard working man and woman, who were waiting for their hard earned cash being paid into their accounts, so that they can live.
A little different to those waiting for taxpayer's money being paid into the Post Office, so that they can sit on their backside doing nowt.

Seems like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. How can you possibly bracket everyone under 25 as feckless scroungers where withholding their benefit make them immediately rush out and take the first job on offer.
If they were to be denied social housing why not use unused military housing barracks instead.
