why 4th of July and not July 4th?

Hi just wondering why The Americans say 4th of July rather than July 4th, like they do any other date (eg September 11th). It seems to be the only date said this way around.

Maybe i am wrong.. but just curious!

Probably because the date for celebration was chosen a long time back when Americans spoke "English english" ;-)

Have now asked this on an American Q & A site, suggesting zippo's answer. Their collective answer is that 'the Fourth of July' is another name for Independence Day. The date is July 4th, but the national holiday is entitled 'the Fourth of July' or 'Independence Day'

They assert that the date was given as July 4th, even in 1776. Must say, i doubt that ! Anyway, that is the reason that the particular day is so styled now, whatever the previous practice for all dates.
