Who knows? It depends how much influence their democratically elected government can have over the Taliban I guess. Education of the next generation would be the best way forward if the Taliban or Sharia law don`t get there first.
// poor woman probably hadn't done anything, anyway. //

The 'adultery' may even have amounted to her being the victim of rape.
The odds are on the men with the guns and the imams in the mosques are the ones that will win,,,,not a chance of change in the next few thousand years then.

I hate to say this, but this appalling mind-set is deeply ingrained – so I suspect they will.
Naomi, and so do i. What an appalling story, one of many.

You asked:

/// How can the West leave the people of Afghanistan at the mercy of people who do things like this? ///

Well recently 3 of our young soldiers were murdered by an Afghan policeman, but that didn't get much attention on AnswerBank, only 15 posts actually.

But of these the usual type of answer from rojash appeared, in answer to another ABer who had put:

"I really do not know why we are trying to help them."

His unsympathetic reply was:

/// Shouldn't that be "I really don't know why we invaded their country"? ///

So I doubt if he will share your sympathy regarding this poor woman.
Throwing money at the country as we are going to do to "re-build" the place will not help get rid of scum like the taliban, far from it, millions of £ will find their way to the taliban and will only help to get them more arms and western luxuries they profess to hate so much.
Old Git

Perhaps it would be better to address the political questions rather than using the thread to indulge in rather contrived personal attacks on other ABers who might not be online to respond.

Please use my full correct username.

And before you speak on behalf of others, consider what you you have previously said;

/// Opinionated busy-body gets into a row. ///
/// Opinionated busy-body gets into a row. //

Was that remark directed at another ABer?

No. It was a remark directed at, and pertinent to, a News item subject.

I think you are getting confused again Old Git

BTW

Old Git is the main part of your user name isn't it?
'anothe' simply being a truncated description of what category of Old Git you style yourself as.

Why do you dislike it when you presumably chose it?
I used to call him Old Git before I realised it was quicker to type AOG. He never complained.

but youre using it in a way to be deliberately confrontational derogatory and insulting, or do different rules apply to you on this site as what you can and cant do ?
The Law of Sharia states that adultery is illegal and the penalty is death.

The woman knew that and took the chance and paid the price.

I feel that this is an excessive response to a common occurrence in the Western world, but I am not a Muslim and i don't live in Afghanistan.
Question Author
I'd guess that the proponents of Shaira law would claim that it's fair. When will the man in this case be shot?
<<youre using it in a way to be deliberately confrontational derogatory and insulting>>

How do you work that one out?

If i refer to you as Will Run will you choose to feel suitably insulted?
This is a deeply complicated situation.

It is very difficult to compare acceptable behaviour with a culture that is different to our own. It is even harder to draw a conclusion from a western news report to make any kind of comparison.

Educated and urbane Afghanis will have been saddened by this incident. They are the ones who are trying to take the country forward but know that there is a mountain to climb.

Shocking crimes are committed in the UK and worldwide, many of them 'justified' by extremist views.

Afghanistan is a country full of potential and many, many beautiful people. I hate reading reports and posts wanting to write the country off as a lost cause.
@Zeuhl

you being deliberately stupid or is it a hereditary condition ?
Baz

are your dealings with people always so angry, unintelligent and uncouth or is it just when you've had a particularly frustrating day playing with the lego bricks?
I love you sometimes, Zeuhl.
Thanks Kromo

Only sometimes?

PS I hope you're not offended by my confrontational abbreviation of your user name L O L
