Everybody already know that Britain does everything on the cheap via minimum wage or volunteers flip_flop. Unless it's for the benefit of the very rich then the sky's the limit.
In fact what has been broadcast is that there are thousands od Army personal there far more equiped to deal with the nutters than a minimum wage G4S temp.
Far from being a shambles I'd say it was if anything overkill. And as has been noted if the upshot of G4S's shortfall is proper military personnel employed at private expense then so much the better. A lot of this I've no doubt is aimed at the deterrent effect of numbers.
Not sure that would makes a difference to the preparation of any terrorist group planning an action at the Olympics One would have imagined that they would have made their plans long ago.
I definitely want to know when the Govt or an important service provider has screwed up - the last thing we need is for them to attempt to hide such lapses on the grounds of "security"
Possibly a slight tangent to the main question but I saw some of the Army lads in my local pub a day or so ago , they were on their way to London and absolutely delighted to be sent to the Olympics . I think all the rest feel the same, they look on it almost as a holiday after Afghanistan. Once the other customers realised what they were there for every one was offering to buy them drinks.
Not in my local AOG, service personnel get a 25% discount on food if they show their ID . But I take your point they do tend to be more respected in the USA.
I don't fancy being in one of the tower blocks that have missiles sited on the roof. No matter whether it's unlikely that a rogue plane would get through,
just the idea they are they makes me go cold.
Having grown up in Northern Ireland, hardly the most peaceful place on earth when I was a sprog, I know all about the need to be vigilant when it comes to terrrorism, but I think we should keep things in perspective....
Last year in the UK more people died from bee and wasp stings than they did from terrorism.
