I've heard before that nuns are supposed to be married to God. Always though this was to mean that they promised their devotion to God and non interest in a relationship with a mortal man.
Now I have heard from two different people recently that early last century, on consecration/ordainment the nuns actually wore proper wedding dresses and even a wedding ring. If this was so, was this a legal marriage (to a spirit!?)?
My first reaction would be to say of course not, but as church leaders are usually also wedding celebrants, it makes me wonder.
As I understand it, in the Uk at least it was not legal in the sense that it was registered by the secular authority. but certainly recognised in the eyes of the church. yes absolutely Nuns have worn wedding adornment, more commonly a wreath of flowers or carried flowers and yes they do sometime still wear a band on the third finger of the left hand.
