We have to be dead careful about these stories. There was that story that the Daily Mail trumpeted last year of a householder defending his property against burglars, and then two days later, the police arrested the home-owner...turns out he was running the biggest cannabis farm in southern England.

The Police are initially in a completely 'no win' situation. They simply have to arrest anyone who may have committed a criminal offence - in this case the farmer, his wife, and the intruders. Theirs is not to 'judge' the situation - theirs is to gather evidence, part of which is via interviews with any suspects, and until the full circumstances are revealed, they cannot afford to not do their duty.
Then, once their investigations are complete, the complete matter is referred to the Crown Prosecution Service who will decide who - if anyone - has a case to answer. Until then, it's all speculation when all we know is what the media has reported.
