i had a arthrocentesis done on my knee with no anasetic no numbing no freezing is this the correct procedure?

when they did it they gave me no warning just came in said that i needed it doing i asked if i could be numbed knocked out or a anesetic of some sort they said no and that i would just feel a scratch. It was the worst pain i have ever been through i was crying screaming felt like i was going to pass out. they stopped in the end said my muscles were filghting too much with it and they could not do it . After this they put a cortisone injections in the same place thinner needle but same length that really hurt. Been told by lots of people that they should of numbed/froze my leg of put me to sleep or gave me an anasetic of which they did not do is this true? worst pain i have ever been in.

i had it done at trafford general hospital went in for a check up after surgery i had 6 weeks ago and a lot of fluid on my knee so the surgeon said i had to have it done.

As far as I would be aware you should have had some sort of numbing - bless you - a disgrace.

is that where they draw fluid off the joint? If so, i had it done on both my knees previously with no anaesthetic. They would certainly not knock you out for it. I also had it done from my hip with no anaesthetic although i did have some oramorph about 1/2 an hour before

yes its when they drain fluid off a joint but they gave me nothing at all before doing it it was the worst pain i have ever been in in my life really not happy with trafford general

I agree that a local anaesthetic would have been appropriate in your case..........also the competence and experience of the doctor is called into question.

You should NOT have experienced that degree of pain.

the problem with having local is that it hurts just as much as having anything else injected into a joint!

im no doctor and can sympathise with you but surely tensing your muscles up didnt do you any favours either

If it occurred at Trafford complain to the Trust by erm complaining.
The hospital PALS team will assist you
and you can now do it orally

gina32 if you had the procedure done to yourself you would understand the pain and that you cant help but tense your muscles worst pain i have ever been in.

As an Orthopaedic out Patient Sister I can re-assure you that this procedure is performed in Outpatients without anaesthetic and is normally uncomfortable but effective, and yes I've had it done myself.
It's not as bad as a local at the dentists
