A 66ft bronze statue of a naked heavily pregnant woman, with half of it showing 'her' insides

I'd be embarrassed if this was in my town, it's an eyesore

Why do 'artists' feel the need to produce monstrosities that shock?

Whatever happened to quality bronzes of famous people erected in the towns where they were born?

I was born in same town as Stan Laurel and there is a bronze statue of him and Oliver Hardy in the town centre, it is a focal point of the town.

Oops sorry, never thought of that!

Ps, what DF? I always go off up the A2, I hardly ever see Dover.
I've not been there for a year or 3, maybe more, never even seen the big screen.
We have two statues in the centre of town. The first one has been known to terrify a drunk or two wandering home in the dark.

I am unsure what the second one is of - but it isn't a huge pregnant lady, and that is something to be thankful for.

You ain't missed anything, baldric, I don't think any more than 15 people have ever looked at it.
i usually approve of the theory of public art in puublic however i really don't like that thing in devon. can't understand why padstein doesn't the mussels proposed. appear quite in keeping to me.

sorry don't know how to post link but it is available in google.
Some of the comments on BBC were very funny. One woman said that they had enough pregnant women in the town. A man speculated on what would happen when her waters broke.
We've got this - http://www.brian-alab...-in-front-of-old.html

Seems a bit dull compared to a 66ft tall half-peeling pregnant woman though.
No - it's ugly - as was the one of the pregnant Thalidomide victim.
I think Alison Lapper Pregnant is a lovely work, it really lifted the square at the time.

There was an interesting documentary about it's making, which also showed her bringing up her child subsequently. A really strikingly beautiful woman who certainly neither perceives herself or comes across as a victim.

Hirst, on the other hand, I've always thought of as a complete wingnut.
You're an Ulverston lad, then joeluke - Hartleys still going? Kendal for me.
Absolutely hate it - I would be so cross if I lived there, its gross!
//it really lifted the square at the time. //

It may, in your opinion, have lifted the square, but it depressed me. Horrible!
I think the Angel of the North is brilliant..............this isn't.
I think it is a total eyesore and ugly. I think I would have to move if I lived in Ilfracombe. Might be OK erected outside a Maternity hospital I suppose. Can someone enlighten me as to what it is supposed to represent.
I also think the other one in London is dreadful too.
The Angel of the North disappointed me. I thought it was going to be much bigger and more imposing. I like the sculpture though.
I think the Angel is great too, though each to their own
Now at least the Ilfracoombeians have something to moan against - remember this recently - which was priceless.

I love the Angel of the North!! Great stuff!
This is on the roundabout next to the Asda I use. I love it. Bringing the past to the present day.
