The result was not really a surprise. The difference between UKIP and the LibDems was. Their vote did collapse. A strong showing for UKIP is a very bad news for the Conservatives.

Is this the start of the Conservative's ditching Cameron?

The most interesting result here is the fact the lib dems have lost their deposit (and 4th behind UKIP!). LOL

That result was anticipated, but no one thought it would be so emphatic. UKIP polled nearly 4 times as many votes as the LibDems.

Probably means Clegg will be ousted before the election as well.

I can't see UKIP getting enough votes to win a seat though

But as Gromit says if the Tory back benchers think they stand a better chance of keeping their seats by swapping horses they'll be ruthless!

Thing is it's not just the Parliamentry Party now the members get a vote - I get the feeling he's losing support there but what do I know I don't frequent the local Tory club much these days :C)

You have to wonder how long a new encumbant would need to be credible 18 months at least I'd have thought - they'll need to get a hurry on.

But any new leader will still need to sign up to the coalition agreement, without the Lib Dems he'd be a dead duck unable to control the house of commons and would look worse than Cameron.

If I were a leadership candidate, no way would I throw my hat in now, I'd let Cameron lose and stand in opposition

There is already talk of UKIP joining forces with the Tories at the next election. At least most of their policies are similar more than you can say about the Condems.

What was the turnout in Corby? I know that for one of the by-elections in Manchester, turnout was very low - 25% or something, which did surprise me a bit.Was the turnout in Corby also low?

It has to be considered a good result for Labour - Mensch had a majority of 2000 at the General Election, so this represents a pretty large swing to Labour. Much of that swing and dissatisfaction will be down to Mensch quitting her role, but a lot will presumably be a protest vote at government policy.

Lib Dem vote has collapsed, and were I Nick Clegg, I would be extremely worried at what this means for the Lib Dem vote at the next general election.

If so, am I right in thinking that Corby has a fairly controversial Town/City hall development - The Cube or something?

At the risk of some facetious remark from the OP, that is a pretty good turnout for a by-election, Corby, particularly when put up against the Manchester ones. What did the Bristol Mayoral vote turn out?

Cameron failed to win the General Election for the Conservatives. And it looks like he will fail to win the next one. They beat UKIP by only 5 votes in Manchester. That is far worse than to be expected. Many Conservative MPs with an eye on their future job prospects might conclude getting rid of Cameron would be a good move. They did it to Thatcher and unexpectedly won after that. They have form.
