The UN recognises the Palestinian State
// The Palestinians won an overwhelming diplomatic victory at the UN on Thursday after 138 out of 193 member states voted to upgrade their status at the global body, sending one of the strongest signals yet in favour of an independent Palestinian state.
Speaking before the vote at the UN General Assembly, Mahmoud Abbas, the veteran Palestinian leader, described the resolution as the “birth certificate” of the Palestinian state. //
The UK abstained. It was also a defeat for the United States who opposed the upgrade.
Do you think the result matters?
Is the United States influence on world affairs waning?
Did the pictures of suffering coming out of Gaza influence the vote?
Israel are not happy about it, but was it an own goal?

Is the United States influence on world affairs waning? - I think so.
Did the pictures of suffering coming out of Gaza influence the vote? - I'm sure they had an influence.
Israel are not happy about it, but was it an own goal? - Yes, but they don't seem to give much of a damn about anything the UN says anyway, so I doubt this will change that attitude.

It will matter to Palestine, and the friends of Palestine, and those who believe the Palestinians have been harshly treated over the years.
The US made this slightly strange argument that they did not vote in favour of upgrading Palestines status because if they did so, and if the motion was passed, this would unnerve Israeli authorities and cause them to be more intransigent when it came to a negotiated settlement - Sounds like a fig leaf to me.
And abstaining just says to the rest of the world that the UK might have some sympathy with the Palestinians, but we do not want to excessively annoy the US.
I think that over the long term, such decisions can only aid the Palestinian authorities, but might cause some short term stubbornness by the Israelis...
