/// The study claimed that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people are still 'relatively invisible' across the media. ///

/// The report commissioned by the broadcaster, which drew on audience surveys and nine 'LGB experts', concluded that all genres of programming should regularly feature non-heterosexual people, with news and drama currently the biggest problem
areas. ///

So if this materialises, will the presenter first introduce themselves by saying "Good Evening I am Jeremy your gay newscaster"?

You've unwittingly 'dailymailed' the question.

Have a look at the story again and think less of Blue Peter and more of Byker Grove, and it will make more sense.

I know it's easy to think of this purely in terms of camp vs. straight-acting, but that's not what the report is getting at.

There's a parallel is the straight world. No-one ever criticises Paddy McGuiness, Danny Dyer, Jeremy Clarkson et al, for there overt heterosexuality.

Likewise there are many gay tv stars whose sexuality is irrelevent - Clare Balding, Alistair Appleton, Sue Perkins, Stephen K Amos, Simon Amstell, Evan Davies, Andrew Hayden-Smith, Stephen Fry and Mary Portas immediately spring to mind.

However, I notice that it's always the Carr/Norton/O'Grady triumvirate that gets referred to in any debate about gay presenters on telly...because they are easily identifiable because they are camp.

That isn't the whole story.

/// Likewise there are many gay tv stars whose sexuality is irrelevent - Clare Balding, Alistair Appleton, Sue Perkins, Stephen K Amos, Simon Amstell, Evan Davies, Andrew Hayden-Smith, Stephen Fry and Mary Portas immediately spring to mind. ///

I've never heard of most of these let alone know that they are gay, so how do they expect them to have an effect on children?

/// But Peter Tatchell, a gay rights campaigner for OutRage!, said: ‘This is a really positive proposal which can help increase understanding and combat prejudice. Every child deserves to grow up to be tolerant, kind, and supportive of other people who are gay or lesbian.’ ///

So I ask again, if one doesn't include the stereotype image of a gay ie over camp portrayals such as Carr, Norton etc. how is one to recognise them, short of they themselves announcing the fact or sticking a badge on them?

Simon Amstell

Simon Amstell is gay?

omg .... and to think that I thought Simon Amstell was funny on NMTB ......... Well how wrong was I then? tut!
AOG

Are you serious?

You haven't heard of 'most' of that list?

That's a little surprising. I would've thought that Mary Portas, Sue Perkins and Stephen Fry and Evan Davies would have at least registered as recognisable to most people.

None of the presenters I mentioned work in children's television, so the question is moot.

However, Simon Amstell used to present T4, which is aimed at teenagers, and the point is - he was able to make throw-away remarks which identified him as gay in the same way that a straight presenter could (and did).

You don't have to be camp to be gay. I think many people think the two words are synonyms.

They aren't.

Very easy really. When a man refers to his boyfriend, you can assume he's gay. Same works with women who refer to their girlfriend, despite the colloquial usage of 'girlfriend' to mean 'female friend'.

/// Very easy really. When a man refers to his boyfriend, you can assume he's gay. ///

Well slap my thigh, why didn't I think of that?

But wait a minute, what if they haven't got a boy friend, and if they have, does everyone who is gay have to go through life, referring constantly to their boyfriend?

And what about 'flat mate' is that suspect or completely heterosexual?
'BBC children's programmes should include more lesbian, gay and bisexual people, a report of the corporation recommends'

Maybe some of us don't want our kids being exposed to these practices?
I guess then you have the option of bringing your children up in an unrealistic and overly sheltered way so they have no real understanding of the real world.
It's simply that children should understand that some kids have two daddies or two mummies and that some adults are married to someone of the same sex, and in general that homosexuality is normal.

AOG have you never heard of Stephen Fry ? Have you heard of Kenneth Kendall ? (Or Lord Kitchener, come to that, though few could be open in those days)
joeluke

What practices?

What do you think gay presenters will do on kids' programmes?

Have sex?

Really?

On tv?
AOG

Yes, gay people refer to their partner.

Do straight people hide the fact that they have wives/girlfriends/boyfriends/husbands?

No.

So why should gay people keep the sex of their partners a secret?

I'm not sure whether you actually believe what you've written, or are playing devil's advocate.
ChuckFickens 'I guess then you have the option of bringing your children up in an unrealistic and overly sheltered way so they have no real understanding of the real world.'

I'd like to think it's called bringing kids up in a hetrosexual normal world
joeluke

What does that entail? How could you possibly manage to 'protect' your kids from ever learning about gay people?

What do you think would happen to them if they found out someone was gay?

Even worse - what do you think the impact wold be on them if one turned out to be gay?
joeluke

By the way - do you have a response to my post from 9:24am today?
I'm sure that whoever's pushing this as a neccessity in a world where they think homosexuality is something from, if you'll pardon the expression, a fairy story will eventually come into contact with young people in the real world and realise that this stuff just doesn't matter to them any more.
I have two teenage children and have been impressed by their and their group of friends acceptance of people for who they are sexually, ethnically, socially, yes, even gingers.
I think the BEEB may have missed the boat.
Thank the lord that people such as JoeLuke are dying out.

And thankfully I was brought up by open minded people. It must be a horrible life disliking people for no real reason. Such a negative emotion.
Even Gingers.... :-0

Giners are super duper cool.....
sp......I wasn't refering to the physical practices, more the mental ones

Happy now?
I agree ummmm, some of my best friends etc etc. :)
