What a lovely man. I did not realise he had been through the war like that and so was able to draw on his own memories. His face was very memorable, although I did not recognise the name. So, indeed RIP Charles Durning.

Yes, I am. Type his name followed by 'legend' into Google. Most of the movie websites use that description for him.

I did, and I didn't see any serious film sites there, just fanboys. I did actually know his name and his face and had seen some of his films; but no way was he a legend. If he's a legend, what are you going to call Clint Eastwood?

Eastwood? An iconic figure, an institution, one who also has legendary status.
Strange you use him as an example though because he and Durning share something in common.
He received less Academy nominations for acting than Durning and neither ever won in that category.
Durning's career gives him legendary status in my(and many others) eyes.
