/// Mr Sutherland said the problem with gangs is not pertinent to a specific age group, neighbourhood or ethnic background. ///
If this is correct, why is it that gangs are mainly made up of young people, mainly in certain neighbourhoods, and of black youths?
/// "It's a whole-society problem that demands a whole-society solution." ///
At the moment it is not a 'whole society' problem, but could become one, unless some of these 'Experts' took off their 'rose tinted specs', and addressed the real problems.

I don't see specific groups highlighted, so I don't know where you got the 'black' reference from, AOG. However, I do think we live in a society where many people have come to believe they have a 'right' to do whatever they want, regardless of the impact on others, or to have whatever they want regardless of the absence of effort to fulfil their ambition through personal and legitimate effort.
From the link. "We need to sort out this rights-obsessive culture where people are aware of the 'me, myself and I', and where the 'we and us' is being deeply lost."
I think that's absolutely right.

I don't think it help that the off spring can take his / her own parent to court if he / she gets a clip around the ear, the system has gone stupid, the schools are in the same position that the teacher dare not say anything to the child or cane the child without getting taken to court, whilst you have idiots telling the parent what he / she can do or what they can not do, trouble will continue & the respect from the off spring has gone. conscription does help!!

/// So we have no "white" gangs in the country. ///
Did I actually say that?
Of course I didn't I am not wearing rose tinted specs or naive enough to believe there are no white gangs, Manchester and Glasgow both being prime examples.
This Conference took place in London and reported by the London standard, so I was referring from a London perspective.
/// African-Caribbean gangs were described as the largest group, followed by south Asian and white gangs. ///

I live right by Moss Side, 5 mins walk from my house. There is plenty of gang activity round here (Gooch, Doddington, Mad Dogs...) and it is in no way restrcted to black youths (or even youths). In fact one of the local gangs, some of who were jailed a few years ago for some very nasty break-in/carjacking including some nasty assaults (think machetes etc...), a few of which in my street, were white kids.
If it was related to domestic violence then it must be rife, ergo, no, it is a result of them growing up in areas where gang culture is a way of life and seen as some kind of right of passage and way to be to "respected" (albeit by fear), to belong to something and get away with things, a prime example being the reluctance of people to provide information to the police, like when Jessie James was shot near here.
Yes there are social factors, poverty, lack of education... and there seems to be a popularity in gangs from different ethnic backgrounds kicking off against each other, mainly I think as you do tend to get pockets of some ethnic minorities who tend to group together in their own mini communities.
Drugs are a major factor too, drugs are a major source of income for the gangs and the control of that kicks off a lot of rivalry over territory and income.

In many cases yes, but a child is only a mirror image of it's parents, if they are taught no manners or respect, how do they know otherwise.
Years ago children were taught to respect their elders, but today they call their teachers, neighbours, and their parents friends all by their first names.
In my day it was Mr, Mrs, Miss, and has regards very close friends of our parents, Uncle or Auntie.

In the UK, over a quarter of women in m/f relationships admit to being bashed by the male in the partnership. The true figure is certainly higher. If a woman eventually gets away from the basher, she will probably have children to bring up on her own. Without a father, many sons may well feel free to ignore their mother's attempts to control them, and may turn to gangs for some kind of support-systems.
Thus, in two ways, violent fathers can be considered to have a contributory responsibility for gang crime. 1) creating the situation where mothers have to struggle with children on their own 2) the example of violent acts against a weaker person which frequently go unpunished

I'm 34 and I was taught the same AOG and I would teach my own children the same respect. I think it is down to the parents in many ways. There are family friends I still call auntie and uncle, even though we aren't related.
I don't think it is so simple as bad parenting creates gang members, gangs breed gang members. I'm not saying that bad parenting doesn't contribute but not everyone who comes from a broken home or has witnessed domestic violence ends up in a gang or getting involved in other criminal behaviour.
Area dictates a lot, you only tend to get gangs in certain areas (domestic violence is widespread) which speaks volumes in itself.

There are many of today's woes put down to 'broken homes' 'no Father figure' and Mothers struggling to bring their children up by themselves.
Why were there not the same problems with the children of those families during WW1 and WW2, when the 'father figure' was missing for years, and in some sad cases forever?
Yes the mothers in those days were left to cope with wartime conditions alone, which included the rationing of food and clothes and seeing that the children got to school, even after spending the whole night awake during an air raid.

oddly enough, we may already have found the cause of youth violence and taken appropriate action. Unfortunately it won't come to fruition for another decade or so
