/// A 58-year-old local resident said there had been two murders in nearby Gloucester Street in recent years and a stabbing of a boy outside a row of shops in Lupus Street before Christmas. ///

/// 'The violence that has started to occur around here is something else, it is frightening for all the residents,' she said. ///

/// 'You used to be able to walk around at night but I am starting to be very wary, especially at night-time.' ///

Such murders are becoming continuous more endemic on our streets, what measures should be taken to protect the peace loving citizens of this country?

Tomorrow we will find he was a gifted footballer that loved his Mum and "never did nobody any harm".

Jake is absolutlty right, 2 years ago there was hardly a day when the mail was giving a death toll of teenage murders, however according to the Met in 2012 that number was 7. So they dissapeared fro the news.

Sensationalism over substance in the media.
Something has to be said about parental control, and also having a goal in life. Young people used to have a job to go to, many followed their fathers into work in an industry, steelworks, coal mining, office work ect or even family buisiness. They had an aim in life and a pride in their family able to contribute to their home life. These values have almost disappeared. Industries have almost finished, some are lucky to get jobs straight from school. What of the future generations?
but many of these killings are sad to say black on black and are gang related particularly in the capital, so something is wrong with communities that are not looking out for their children, or indeed letting them get involved in gangs in the first place. If these people think that they have no where to belong, join a gang as a kind of home, then you have to start addressing that first.
I think you'd be safer in Syria or Mali at the moment. Cameron seems completly oblivious to whats happening on our streets as shown by his latest cuts in police numbers. Foreign aid should go to parts of Britain where the innocent are being slaughtered not to some despot abroad.
Stabbings are not unknown in Pimlico, but I can guarantee that if one happens, the press will find one 'local resident' to say that everything has changed and it's not safe to walk the streets any more. I lived in Dolphin Square from 1969, one street away from Lupus Street, and the very first day I was there there was a stabbing outside the nearest pub. What struck me about it was that it was barely reported locally and that the pub regulars were not concerned about it, one only remarking that it was a shame because the publican had only just taken over the pub ! But I lived in the Square for twenty years or so, and my ex for a good many years after, and we never felt afraid to be walking in the streets.

Anyway aog, you'd best avoid Pimlico, and London generally. It might not be safe and you could be a statistic to add to the 42 or whatever it is for any recent year
surely one, is one too many?
/so something is wrong with communities that are not looking out for their children, or indeed letting them get involved in gangs in the first place/

Who lets their youngsters join a gang? Are you suggesting that parents turn a blind eye?
some seem to be, according to the police records there are over 250 gangs, roughly 4,500 people who belong, this is in London, no idea about other cities. Perhaps some can't control their children, young people, perhaps it's a case of one parent family, where the parent works, so can't be there all the time, If its the father who is absent, then no male in the house to be able to help, there has to be lot's of reasons and some is the lack of parental control.
I would say its more down to peer pressure.
/surely one, is one too many? /

No

One would be better than fifty nine

Which is better than One hundred and twenty two - which is the number of cyclists killed in london in 2012

Keeping a sense of proportion is the important thing - 59 'homicides with a sharp implement' in a population of 13 million is not an 'endemic'
perhaps some are, but suggest that some are sucked into this because of drugs, easy money, and a life of crime because no one is out there telling them that education is a good thing, that family life can be a good thing that there is a better way. If you get a job stacking shelved for 100 quid a week, no idea the going rate, and your buddy says make some real money, 10 times that, by selling drugs on the street, which do you suppose they are likely to do.
where do you get this 13 million from,

Oh so we should not worry then?

I wonder if one of yours was murdered on the streets of London, you would accept the excuse from the Met.that "murders in London are at a 42 year old low".

I wonder what the family of Stephen Lawrence would have said if they where told 1993 was one of the lowest numbers of murders in London.

1990 - 184
1991 - 184
1992 - 175
1993 - 160
1994 - 169
1995 - 167
1996 - 139
1997 - 190
1998 - 159
1999 - 146
"Excuse" is your choice of word, aog. How is it an "excuse" if the police say that there are fewer murders? What is it an excuse for?

Then again it could be you, with your 'couldn't care less attitude'

You know what they say "I didn't think it could ever happen to me"

But then being a much caring person than you appear to be, I hope it never does.

AOG bit lost here your stats are from 13 years ago? Relevance?
aog, I have to be realistic. So do you. Some things never change. You prefer to live in a world of your own imagining, in particular one in which there were no stabbings in Pimlico and there were no gangs or crime families there; there were three families in my time there and woe betide anyone of one seen in a pub or territory belonging to another; and to read scare stories.

Most likely from the same source as he got his 1200 feet from Euston to St Pancras from.
AOG

Out of interest, which of the answers to your question do you agree with?

I think that em10's post from 14:45 encapsulates it pretty well.

What about you?
i think it must be outer London added in, that would be about right.
