I still do not understand the point of the last 2 posts. This is not a specific issues about the safety of the horse meat - plenty here have acknowledged that horsemeat might actually represent healthier alternative to beef - it is an issue of deception.
Supermarkets and manufacturers are obliged to inform the consumer of the contents of their foods, particularly processed foods - and that is a good thing, because that allows the consumer to make an informed choice. And such manufacturers and retailers usually charge a premium for "pure" food - like cod fish fingers, or 100% beef - so adulterating the beef with meat from other animals is all about deception and fraud.
Given we have a global supply chain, and given that there are unethical and criminal elements always looking to make money, we need to tighten up the testing of source material, to offer provenance and consumer assurance.
This is not just about an "eww" factor. This is about ethical business practice, consumer rights and ensuring the material entering the food chain for human consumption is of the appropriate standard and is what it says it is....
