Immigration is not always a good thing for the UK, as some would have us believe.

/// Half of all crime committed in Britain by foreign nationals takes place in London. ///

But the Poles are worse ! Well, in terms of simple numbers they are. Romanians are only second.
//In connection with//
Does not mean they were found guilty!

How many 'Brits' were arrested so that we can have a comparison please.

I make that just over 5000 crimes, so I'm puzzled as to why 27725 people would be arrested- unless they burgle houses etc in very large groups

Don't worry folks; it won't happen. Romania's 'David Cameron' is on the case.

Romania's Prime Minister, Victor Ponta, has said his compatriots 'will not rush' to Britain next year

Daily mail, eh? Headline is 30,000, figure in box is 27,725, headline is of 30,000 arrested for sex crimes and violence, figure in box is a total of 4,023 for sex crimes and acts of violence. One day, perhaps, the Mail will employ subs to write a headline which actually fits the text .
Pesky foreigners, coming here, taking all our jobs, committing all the crimes.. :)

The article is interesting- Firstly, I wonder if that arm on the girls leg in the picture is a romanian arm? I think we should be told...

I find it a bit odd that the figures are presented the way they are. 30,000 arrests over 5 years, so 6,000 arrests per year - but only 624 in prison? Sounds like a strange arrest: conviction/sentence rate to me.

And you have to put these things in context ; Across the UK as a whole, there are, on average each year, around 1,600,000 arrests made.

And then this business of critics "estimating that we shall receive 50,000 a year" for 5 years? Where is that figure derived from?

Seems more alarmist than genuinely worrying to me - very sinister arm in that photo though... :)
Yesterday jake-the-peg asked if AB (or maybe the country as whole) was becoming more racist.

But even if you dispute the way the Mail has presented these figures, you do see why perhaps people ARE becoming more "racist", because we can see the damging effect some "races" are having on this country.

Same story from the Telegraph

Jakes question from yesterday

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Society-and-Culture/Question1220198.html

How many of those arrests resulted in charges? What's the betting the "nearly 30,000" will be rounded up again to 50,000 by this afternoon?
@VHG I would agree with you that a steady, relentless publishing of articles about immigration purpose- designed to provoke reactions of outrage and/or fear, that constantly seek to portray immigrants as feckless scoungers, here to feed off our generous and soft touch benefits system, or are here to rob us blind or rape our women or just crowd out and water down our Britishness will definitely tend to inflame racist or xenophobic opinion....
/Immigration is not always a good thing for the UK as some would have us believe. /

a link would be interesting to any time EVER someone has posted that immigration is ALWAYS a good thing

The notion that thousands of people entering won't include a proportion of criminals is just foolishness.
At 31 March 2012 there were 11,127 foreign nationals in prisons in England and Wales from 156 different countries.

Ten of these countries accounted for one-half of the foreign nationals in prisons. Jamaica, Poland and the Irish Republic are the countries with the most nationals in prison establishments.

Oh and you'll love this AOG

88.8% of the prison population is white

That compares to just over 90% of the UK population

So the Prison population pretty accurately matches the UK ethnicity from that perspective

This is quite an interesting document regarding the prison breakdown

Admit there is an error in the headline when it states 30,000 but if you look at the second paragraph it states;

//// 'NEARLY' 28,000 Romanian citizens have been held for serious offences in London over the past five years, including violence and sex crimes. ///

Figure in the box is 27,725.

Regarding your figure of 4,023 for sex crimes and acts of violence.

I make that 3,720 142 rapes + 10 murders + 666 sex crimes + 2902 acts of violence = 3,720.

Oh and by the way the secret is in the words "in connection" meaning that more were arrested n connection with the actual number of crimes committed.

VHG's Telegraph link doesn't tell us how many Romanians were arrested in 2011, to compare with the estimated 87,000 resident. That makes the use of the weasel words "up to" even more obvious than usual. "Up to" is anything from zero to whatever upper figure is chosen. Not saying that a proper analysis would not be damning, but it would help if papers made claims with a bit more regard to statistical honesty or accuracy.
/ the secret is in the words "in connection" meaning that more were arrested n connection with the actual number of crimes committed. /

weaselly gutter journalism
not made any better by reiterating and unravelling it
Could that chap be trying to pick that girls pocket?
aog, applying our knowledge of the world, is it likely that 27,725 people will be arrested for that number of offences? Taking the bigger figure, the total of all in the box,it's 5 a case. Most burglaries, most murders, most sex crimes, most assaults, are committed single- handed; they are not joint enterprises. The figures,as presented don't make a lot of sense
Congratulations to everyone who have read between the lines of the Mail report.

I think we're all pretty much up to speed here.

Interesting figures JTP.

Also, AOG - does this story damage the idea that certain races are drawn to crime?
By the way does 'arrested in connection with' equate to 'convicted of'?

Is it a one-to-one relationship?

....or not?

No one mentioned colour, but seeing that it was you who chose to bring it up, here are also some more interesting figures.

*** Out of the British national prison population, 10% are black and 4% are Asian.315 For black Britons this is significantly higher than the 2% of the general population they represent. ***

*** Overall black prisoners account for the largest number of minority ethnic prisoners (54%). Between 1999 and 2002 the total prison population grew by just over 12% but the number of black prisoners increased by 51%. ***

*** At the end of June 2009, 33% of minority ethnic prisoners were foreign nationals. ***
