// Labour MP David Miliband has resigned from the board of Sunderland FC because of new manager Paolo Di Canio's "past political statements".

Mr Di Canio has previously claimed to be "a fascist, not a racist".

The former UK foreign secretary was serving as the club's vice-chairman and as a non-executive director. //

Mr Di Canio was pictured in 2005 making a raised-arm salute to a group of supporters of Italian club Lazio, where he was playing. //

Is a self confessed fascist the right person to represent a Premiership Football Team?

What good did he do for Sunderland FC?
What good is he anyway?

// David Miliband has helped Sunderland to secure a pioneering African sponsorship deal. The club's partnership with Invest in Africa is, according to the club, the most lucrative such commercial transaction in Sunderland's history and will see the team wear the logo of the not-for-profit organisation on their shirts for the next two years. //
Er, are we still sending aid to Africa?
Surely the important question here is why are Sunderland employing a self-confessed Fascist ?

The whole board for Sunderland should resign on mass !

The ultra right wing are marching again, all over Europe, We ignore this at our peril. We didn't take it seriously in the 30's and we all know where that got us.
Anyway, how on earth can someone be a Fascist but not a racist ?

Isn't that like being the Pope but not a Catholic ?
Judging by the headline I thought that this thread was a criticism of David Milliband in some way.

But then the whole content was rather confusing, first the headline, then a piece regarding David Milliband, interrupted by reference to Mr Di Canio, and then back to the former foreign secretary, and then once again back to Mr Di Canio,

As regards to whether or not a self confessed fascist is the right person to represent a Premiership Football Team?

I can see nothing wrong with it providing his politics doesn't in anyway affect the running of the football team, just as it wouldn't if he happened to be a self confessed communist.
I wonder if there was a flounce form he should have completed?
Who?
I don't think he's really a facsist, just sounds like an out of contet a sound bite to me. Anyway I don't think it's relevant to running a soccer team, even Sunderland!

Here is a picture of Di Cani waving to a friend in the crowd...

Di Canio has played and managed in this country for many years before arriving at Sunderland.
Why mention his politics now?
Unless he has all the non Italians at Sunderland shot(i.e all the players) I can't see what the problem is.
I thought Miliband was emigrating anyway.
Di Canio has twice had bans in Italy for his salutes to the crowd
I stand corrected Gromit, I had no idea it was that bad. I'm not huge fan of the round ball game though.
