Yet Another London Killing.
68 Answers
Many have pointed out to me when I have stated that crime was not as widespread 'in my day' as it is today, that it was it is just because we get to hear about it more these days..
Well I wonder how many of you know that yet another killing took place only yesterday in North London?
I only heard a snippet about it on a London radio station news report, and it took me a while to find this link, can't find a report of it in any newspaper, and yes not even in the Daily Mail.

How many times do we hear "no arrests have been made" I wonder how many just fade away without anyone being charged and convicted, and even if some are, I wonder if their names will ever be remembered in the future?
No such stabbings and shootings were never on the scale of which they are today, "in my day".

They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” - Aristophanes (attributed to Socrates).
"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of
today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for
parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as
if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is
foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest
and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."
- Peter the Hermit, A.D. 1274
"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise and impatient of restraint." Attributed to Hesiod, c.750 B.C.
"Back in my day" is old and dated and will never change. I can pretty much guarantee that if and when I grow old I'll be saying similar things.

I suspect that you are right AOG. I was thinking about this issue a few days ago after a discussion with some friends in the local watering hole.
In the last 3 years in what used to be a quiet suburb where I grew up there have been 5 young people murdered and I can only remember 1 instance in the 50's 60's and 70's in this area.
4 of these 5 teenagers were gang members and as such I suppose connected with drugs. The other one was apparently a case of mistaken identity and the intended target was a gang member.

I didn't. But there again, I live oop north and unless these things are reported Nationally and I see them I wouldn't know that they had happened.
Which is rather the point that other people have made.......

There were relatively few criminal gangs in London when the Krays and Richardsons 'ruled'. It is said they were very cosy with the police and it was in their interests to keep low profiles as far as stabbing and shootings were concerned. Nowadays there a many more gangs from the ethnic minorities who are fighting each other to control local drum business. There is an almost unlimited supply os weapons from Eastern Europe which is fuelling the modern gun culture.
I've noticed myself a remarkable rise in crime over just the last ten years or so. This coincides with the time I started to pay more attention.
Statistics tend to back AOG up, to a point - crime rates apparently rose relatively steadily between the period c.1910-1990, but have been on a downwards trend since.

Depends what you mean by "in the past".......60 yrs ago almost ALL houses had the wireless and some even had TV and then of course there was the commercial traveler and pigeons if necessary......we seemed to get the news somehow.

Not very comforting for the victims or their families though.
