Suarez
I've just seen people whinging on the news about the ten match ban Suarez got for biting an opponent like an animal. Shouldn't they be directing their anger at the player for being such a thug?

Joggerjayne,
We are talking about biting not shooting someone. Suarez's actions were stupid but not life threatening. At worse, Ivanovic might have a bruise. A lunge with studs showing is a far worse attack and is far more common than a bite that drew no blood.
I do not like the player and his record is bad but I find the howls of derision disproportionate. Far worse happens every single weekend.

The hand wringing is strong here.
Yes he was stupid and yes he should be punished but the way some have talked here and in other places is almost as if he'd decapitated the other player and ate his flesh.
I'm guessing many of you don't do fast paced high octane sports where the need to win coupled with raging hormones can and does make people act out of character in frustration?
Obviously not.

So biting someone is okay because, luckily, he didn't draw blood.
Having unprotected sex with lots of strangers is okay because the actual statistical likelihood of any given person having a blood borne disease is quite low.
Me driving home after fifteen vodkas is okay as long as I don't hit anyone.
Etc
Etc
Unacceptable acts cannot be excused by the fact that, fortuitously, there was no serious consequence. Otherwise, every drink driver should be let off provided they didn't hit anyone.
Or am I missing something?

Ludwig,
Suarez has played exceptionally well this season. The votes for the PFA best player award have probably already been cast before this unfortunate incident. So there is the possibility he could win.
Pissing through someones letterbox is not very nice. But if it was King Kenny's, I'll let you off.

"He obviously judged the pressure of the bite just right in order to express a sportingly appropriate level of aggression whilst avoiding a breakage of the skin, and the drawing of blood.
Such judgement should be commended. A clumsy bite from a lesser player could have been dangerous."
Excellent trolling! well done...

From the Metro, confirming voting has already closed.
// Luis Suarez’s bite on Branislav Ivanovic will have no bearing on his chances of winning the PFA Player of the Year award – according to the rules of the vote.
However, the incident comes just two days after Suarez was named on the shortlist for the PFA award and it has emerged that, with voting for the ultimate prize closed, the Professional Footballers’ Association could be put in the extremely embarrassing position of having the 26-year-old win their flagship award later this month while banned from playing for his attack on Ivanovic. //

All very odd. Players expect tackles, so the authorities judge a red card for a bad one to be worth three games off. Jumping into the crowd and kicking a spectator is not contemplated by anybody, so is worth 9 months off. Biting an opponent, quite deliberately, with premeditation, is somewhere between the two and worth longer than racially abusing an opponent (Suarez got 8 games off for that before) so is ten games.
Time for some 'sentencing guidelines' like courts have ! As mentioned, rugby takes a tougher line on biting; 18 months or more off. Why soccer is so feeble must be a question of money, or something equally irrelevant. If Suarez got banned for a season he really ought not to be able to complain, but other clubs with players of value and like him might think that a dangerous precedent.
