Who? I hear some ask, yes that is exactly my point.

Interesting to note however that violent video games have been blamed for the murderous savagery of these thugs.

/// The old TV cowboy films had people shooting others all the time. I saw an early Lone Ranger programme in which the hero shot dead a villain when the villain was unarmed, wounded, and on the ground. (No wonder the Lone Ranger wore a mask) That was shown to children in the 1950s ///

That doesn't sound like the Lone Ranger of old to me, when the 'Goodies' wore White Stetsons and played to the rules whereas the 'Baddies' wore Black Stetsons and never played to the rules.

It surprised me too, aog. I watched the programme avidly when I was a child and so was astonished, as an adult, to see this sequence in that very old one; it may have been the very first. I suppose that his attorney would have argued that the Lone Ranger had a real and present fear and belief that the man shot had got another gun or had a gun within reach and was about to use the weapon; you can't trust these baddies and this one had been using a gun. That this would have been an unjustified belief, as was factually clear, at the time, but acting in "the agony of the moment" could have got the masked hero home . (Or ,of course, local law permitted it anyway !)

/// An extremely spurious assertion by a DCI is *not* evidence that video games cause such awful acts. ///

By the very tone of your post you are assuming that I agree with this DCI.

If this is correct, please provide me with the evidence that I also have ever made such 'spurious assertion'

/// I'm not convinced that you know anything whatsoever about video games (let alone violent ones). So I challenge you to provide some credible evidence supporting the argument that violent video games cause violent behaviour. ///

In that you are correct, but only in your wild guess that I know nothing of video games and I have never proposed that I do.

So having cleared that one up on my own behalf, can I now once again 'challenge you' to provide any evidence otherwise.

I eagerly await the said proof or in the absence of this an apology please.
AOG:

"

The reference for the report on bullying again dates from 2001 and is in stark contrast to the US govt's National Threat Assessment Center on school violence published at around the same time, which saw no correlation:

Kutner & Olsen summarise their research:

Former FBI Profiler denies that video games cause violence (but argues that they can incense people who are already seriously disturbed, just as any violent media can:)

There's Kromo's evidence. I'd have a look at it.

How many more times do I have to say this I personally never suggested that video games have anything to do with the escalating violence that we now see.

If you had been following past debates on the subject you would have also noticed the fact that this seems to be yet another excuse given along with other such things as absent fathers, deprived area and upbringing, lack of opportunities etc etc.

My remark "Interesting to note however that violent video games have been blamed for the murderous savagery of these thugs was simply appertaining to this, nothing more nothing less, no matter what you or others take it upon themseves to read into it more than there is.
AOG,

I took your wording of this question to mean that you do believe video games contribute to violent crime:

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/News/Question1235106.html

I also don't really see why you would have mentioned video games in the first place in this thread if you thought they were totally inconsequential.

If you actually do not believe that video games cause violent or aggressive behaviour, then say so outright and I will retract my comments and admit I was mistaken. The impression you give, however, is that you do believe they are related, so I'll continue to assume you do unless told otherwise.
AOG - no need to be so uptight. I've learned the hard way that if people don't understand what I mean, then it's (best to treat it as) my fault for not being clear enough in the first place. Likewise, if people don't get your meaning the first time try to say what you wanted to clearer rather than going on for the "aggressive self-defence" tactic.
